HTML 5

So I've been catching up on the whole HTML 5/XHTML 2 discussions over the new standards. It seems as if browsers are supporting html5 in the next spec. Some of the ideas of xhtml2 seem good to me, like the fact that it moves to xml, which is supported by major browsers. But I think html5 has good points too.

http://xhtml.com/en/future/x-html-5-versus-xhtml-2/ had some good comparisons.

I think i also like <nl> over <nav> and <section>'s with <h> seems logical. And I agree with that site about pretty much all of the "uncool" points on html5.

Anyway, I'm sure html 5 will be a nice improvement, but probably nothing we will appreciate until about 5 years after it's official.

Thoughts?

I haven't taken a close look at HTML5, but from what I've seen a lot of it looks unnecessary when there already exist parts of HTML that do the same job, whereas XHTML 2 is more about reducing HTML to its most important components.

Interesting points. After XHTML 1, I never went back to HTML, it's so much easier to use and understand. Obviously, HTML is improving, but I think I'll be favoring XHTML 2 seeing as how the first one was a nice change. The website seems to favor XHTML as they point out more good things about it. Thanks for bringing this up, I had forgotten all about the discussions of these standards.

that is definitely one of the main things that I like about XHTML.

hmm, good point. I do like xhtml 1 strict for that.

Unfortunately, I doubt xhtml 2 will be finished before html5 as most of the next beta browsers favor html5.
