Auto show season formally launches with the 61st International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, where promoters promise more cars than the massive Frankfurt am Main complex has ever held before. That might seem hard to believe, given that the fair center covers 10 halls, mostly with two or three floors. Of the international auto shows, Frankfurt is global in its scale, requiring much caffeine, athleticism, and personal drive to personally take in the greatest machines on display.

2006 Audi A4 Cabriolet
Motor Trend wrote:
The last A4 to receive the line's new design theme made a small splash in Frankfurt, mostly because its new appearance looked decidedly familiar. Nonetheless, there's plenty to report on the new Cabriolet, which will arrive in the U.S. in fall 2006. First and foremost is its fresh face, which now features a single-frame grille and clear-glass headlights that lend it a more striking stance than its now-staid predecessor. Underhood, Audi's advanced FSI direct-injection engines are adopted. For the U.S., the A4 Cabrio will get Audi's ubiquitous 2.0-liter/197-hp turbocharged four-cylinder as the base powerplant, with the 3.1-liter/255-hp V-6 offered as the premium engine. Transmission choices will include a continuously variable multitronic (CVT) and a six-speed Tiptronic automatic. Because luxury-car customers expect safety regardless of body style, the new A4 Cabrio receives several upgrades, including two-stage front airbags, the latest-generation ESP stability control, improved side-impact protection, active rollover protection, and optional xenon headlights with dynamic cornering technology.
2006 BMW 130i

It's a shame BMW decided against offering the 1 Series in the United States. A compact, affordable BMW has even greater appeal today, as young drivers openly aspire to drive luxury-branded vehicles. With gas prices finally outpacing drinking water, compacts may have growing appeal, especially if they boast more than 260 horsepower, like the new 130i. Sized much like a Mazda3 five-door, the range-topping 130i boasts a 3.0L inline six with 232 lb-ft of torque, capable of delivering a 6.2-second 0-60-mph time. An available M Sports Package can make this hot hatch even better, with a sport-tuned suspension and M aero package, boasting distinct front and rear fascias, and body-colored side sills. The interior is dressed with leather and all the obligatory M cues, from door sills to stitching. If the Audi A3 is the success it deserves to be Stateside, rest assured that BMW will take notice.
2006 Chrysler 300 diesel

In its first showing, the Chrysler 300C will be getting the all-new, all-aluminum turbocharged V-6 for European markets, and possible North American consumption. The new engine is smaller and lighter than the previous I-5 European diesel, with 3.0 liters for displacement, producing 207 horsepower and a whopping 376 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm. The CRD (common rail diesel) uses high-pressure injection, variable geometry fins on the turbocharger, four-valve heads, and dual overhead cams -- the result is more power while burning less fuel, sending fewer pollutants out the exhaust. Look for diesel 300Cs to use the same five-speed automatic used in the Chrysler Hemi.
2006 Citroen C6

While the name conjures images of high-performance Chevy, the shape is pure Citroen. Several C6 cars were on display, as the large, swoopy sedan is readied for production later this year. Despite the massive, curve and planar exterior surfaces, the interior is less avante garde, with a more traditional European-style control arrangement. The C6 is packed with Citroen's latest technologies, such as heads-up display, lane departure warning system, xenon direction headlamps, active suspension, pedestrian-friendly active hood system, and an electronic air deflector. Two engines will be offered: a 2.7L/208-hp diesel and a 3.0L/215-hp gasoline engine, both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The chassis is set up with double wishbones at the front, multilinks to the rear, with an active suspension system. A premium sedan that won't be mistaken for anything else, the C6 charts its own path with prestige and panache.
2006 Fisker Tramonto

Henrik Fisker is on the cusp of realizing the dream that most car enthusiasts harbor: launching your own car company. The SoCal-based Fisker Coachbuild will create a limited series of special, rebodied production cars in the old coach-building tradition that resulted in the most memorable classic Duesenbergs and Ferraris. Henrik is supremely qualified to launch this ambitious plan, with such cars as the Aston Martin DB9, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and BMW Z8 to his credit. The concept distills down to Henrik taking premier automobiles and designing fresh bodywork for them, with materials emphasis on aluminum and carbon-fiber, and also pressed steel. The car designs will have their own unique character, but be united by a common grille theme, inspired by the Raptor fighter plane. Fisker unveiled its first two models in Frankfurt, the Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG-based Tramonto roadster and the BMW 6 Series-based Latigo CS. Customers will be able to order a complete car, or deliver a production Mercedes or BMW for transformation. Both models are available with numerous performance upgrades. Production volume targets are 150 units per series, with the intent to continuously move on to fresh designs. Base price for either model was said to be $110,000 Euros (about $135,000 U.S.).
2006 Honda Accord
Motor Trend wrote:
The Honda Accord has received a variety of exterior, interior, and technology updates for 2006. Have no fear, the changes aren't as extreme as they may appear -- this is the European-market Accord, not the Ohio-built, best-seller adored in America. Stateside, this car is sold as the Acura TSX, a well-executed, four-cylinder, near-lux sedan whose appeal may increase in measure with fuel prices. This Accord features a fresh face, with new headlamps, grille, and front fascia. Likewise, the rear "soft parts" have also been updated, while the sheetmetal remains untouched. On the tech front, the Accord is now available with the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) that uses a camera to help keep the sedan in its lane. As a safety feature, the system will issue a warning with correction, then require the driver to take over so as to not promote hands-free driving. The car also gains adaptive cruise control that uses radar to judge distances to cars in front, then adjusts speed accordingly. Both features should be welcomed on the crowded, high-speed autobahn.
2006 Honda Civic

Honda is making waves around the globe rolling out its all-new, eighth-generation Civic. While in the United States, we’re most excited about the 200-hp Si model, in Europe, it is the combination of zippy performance and fuel economy in the base models that has consumers fired up. In Europe, there are three engine choices: 1.4L i-DSI (intelligent-Dual and Sequential Ignition), 1.8L, and 2.2 i-CDTi diesel. Given the rise in gasoline prices, all commuters can appreciate the new hybrid with a 1.3L three-stage i-VTEC engine that can recover 10 percent more energy than the outgoing model. This hybrid system has 20 percent greater output than the ’05 model and still shows a five percent improvement in fuel economy. The Civic also boasts gains on the safety front, with standard features such as ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and a seatbelt reminder system for the rear passengers. The company expects that the new Civic will achieve Euro NCAP ratings of 5 stars for front and side impact safety.
2006 Hyundai Getz

My, how far Hyundai has come. Today, Hyundai waves "quality" as a proud banner around the globe, with growing reach around the world. Hyundai kicked off its press conference with a dynamic video, arguably the best at the show, combining visuals of headquarters, factories, and cars creating the necessary "wow factor." While the Frankfurt unveilings were relatively mild, the message was clear: Hyundai is on the march. The Korean giant entered the supermini segment in Europe in '02 with the Getz, seeking a slice of the market segment that accounts for 26 percent of sales. Last year, Getz sales fell just shy of 200,000 units. At the show, Hyundai revealed a modest freshening amid dancers, drummers, and soccer players. (Yes, this is Euro-style showbiz.) In addition to a facelift, the little car is treated to three new, thrifty engine choices and electronic stability control. It’s relevant to the N.A. audience that Hyundai is making rapid progress around the world, and automakers that can't react as quickly with top-notch, affordable products better getz outta their way.

New exterior colors, a revised front fascia with new corner-following adaptive headlamps, LED taillamps, and metallic gray 18-inch alloy wheels highlight the exterior changes, while restyled gauges plus new Camel leather and Espresso wood trims keynote the interior tweaks. The 288-horse V-8 carries over, but it’s now backed by a six-speed sequential-shift automatic for quicker acceleration. Wood, leather, and a premium Mark Levinson audio system are standard. |
2006 Maybach 57S

This “Special” edition of the already singular Maybach 57 lives up to its “S” moniker by virtue of a bored-and-stroked, 6.0-liter version of the omnipotent twin-turbocharged V-12. Horsepower climbs to 604; torque to 738 pound-feet—hang on to your champagne. Suspension is appropriately modified, with a lower ride height and stiffer damping for crisper handling response. Inside, the 57’s wood inserts are replaced with carbon fiber and piano-lacquer trim. You can have this super-quick (claimed top speed is 172 mph), super-luxury four-door in any color you want, as long as it’s black or silver.
2006 Opel Astra TwinTop

There’s more to this elegant two-door coupe than initially meets the eye thanks to a creatively designed three-piece retractable hardtop that converts the Astra to a cabrio at the touch of a button in less than 30 seconds, while still allowing convenient access to more than 200 liters (7 cubic feet) of storage space in the trunk (twice that with the top up). Comparable to most midsize coupes, the Astra measures in at 177 inches long, and Opel claims there is comfortable room in that back seat for two adults “even for long journeys.” Buyers may choose between four gasoline engines offering from 105 to 200 horsepower, a 1.9-liter/150-hp common rail diesel engine, or step up to the top-of-the-line 2.0-liter/200-hp Ecotec turbo that promises top speeds above 140 mph, when it arrives in European dealerships in spring 2006.
2006 Porsche Cayenne
Motor Trend wrote:
While Porsche proudly displayed its mighty Cayenne Turbo, the SUV news of the show was the German sports-car specialist announcing production intent for a Cayenne hybrid by the end of the decade. The drive system is being co-developed with Volkswagen, and it will likely see service in the Touareg and Audi Q7, as well. Following the full-hybrid concept, the VW/Porsche system will team traditional a gasoline engine with an electric motor that can work independently or together as load demands. Porsche claims the system will improve fuel economy by 15 percent, though the underlyng message was that it would also improve performance. Unofficially, we've heard that Porsche likes the BMW model for the U.S. market, thinking that a smaller "Boxstered" Cayenne could work in the same way the X3 works with the X5.
2006 Skoda Octavia RS

In introducing the Skoda Octavia RS, the firm has resurrected the RS model subtype designation used since the 1970s for its competition-bred cars. Its 130 RS model won its class in European touring car racing in 1981, and it achieved a measure of success in the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally. The current Octavia RS, available as both a hatchback and sedan, pays homage to its predecessor with performance that makes the RS the most powerful Skoda in production. At the heart of the matter is VAG's 2.0-liter TFSI engine that produces 200 bhp, and 280 Nm of torque from 1800 to 5000 rpm. The TFSI is a turbocharged unit with its claim to fame as being the first gasoline engine to inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, and it features double counter-balance shafts for smooth operation. A number of visual cues tip the hand and reveal this is not an ordinary Octavia. From the two exclusive colors (Race Blue and Sprint Yellow) to the lowered stance, front and rear spoilers, and color-coded bodywork, it screams “get out of the way” -- or maybe it's the retina-burning yellow paint.
2006 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 can lay claim to pioneering the car-based sport/cute movement 11 years ago. Here, in Frankfurt, Toyota unveiled the third-generation RAV4 during a contortionist's performance. An odd entertainment choice, as this new RAV4 has grown to measure nearly as long as the Highlander, almost bumping up a complete vehicle size. Part of the dimensions are exaggerated by rear bumper depth and the hood length, but no one will be calling this new model “cute.” Within the more masculine exterior is a feature-filled interior, with numerous notable touches such as illuminated cup holder, upper glovebox, and “magic” fold-flat second-row seats. Three powerplants were announced from Europe: 2.0L/152-hp, 2.2L/136-hp diesel, and 2.2L/177-hp diesel. The big news not disclosed for the U.S. market is the first-time offering of a V-6. Destined to be the strongest in the class, we hear it will output [dramatic pause] 268 horsepower. Also, a hybrid variation is expected to follow within a year. Who you callin' cute?
2007 Audi Q7

Better late than never--that's Audi's approach to the luxury-SUV segment, which it is entering for the first time with the all-new Q7. But good things come to those who wait, right? The Q7, at least on paper, appears to be a good thing. It sports a 4.2-liter/350-hp direct-injection V-8, essentially the same engine in the hot-rod RS4 sports sedan; it offers seating for up to seven, with second and third rows that fold flat when cargo, and not passengers, is the priority; and it has a long of standard features, including Quattro all-wheel drive, ESP stability control, 18-inch wheels, and the MMI interior operating system. An adaptive air suspension will be offered as an option when U.S. sales begin in summer 2006. Shortly after, in the fall, a 3.6-liter/280-hp V-6 will join the engine menu, lowering the V-8's entry price, which will likely be around $50,000. The biggest news regarding the Q7 came when Audi surprised the press with the Q7 Hybrid concept, which is powered by the 4.2-liter V-8 and an electric motor, the latter good for 43 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. The result, according to Audi, is fuel consumption nearly 13 percent less than in the standard V-8 model. Audi projects that the Q7 Hybrid will arrive in the U.S. sometime in 2008.
2007 Bentley Azure

Bentley revealed its convertible intentions with the Arnage Drophead Coupe concept shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2005, and the Azure brings them to production-ready life at Frankfurt. Nestled in an expensive neighborhood alongside Lamborghini, Bentley quietly unveiled its pampering convertible. Filling a product gap left by the previous 1995-2002 convertible, the Azure becomes the Bentley flagship. While it shares an exterior in common with the current Arnage range, the interior has been significantly redesigned for this application, focused on providing a rich cabin for four. The complex folding soft-top works on hydraulics, and the transformation takes less than 30 seconds. The hefty car is powered by a twin-turbo V-8 that produces 450-hp. Details of market availability and pricing will be released nearer the Azure's on-sale date.
2007 Cadillac BLS

As part of Cadillac's renewed push to make the brand into one with international reach, the BLS near-lux sedan makes its production debut, following the concept’s unveiling in Geneva. Smaller than Cadillac's current entry-level car, the rear-drive CTS, the BLS will initially be sold only in Europe, though it is reported to be under consideration for the U.S. market. The front-drive BLS will be available with a choice of turbocharged, small-displacement gasoline and diesel engines, ranging from 150-255 hp. (Trivia: This will be the first diesel-powered Cadillac since the early 1980s.) Four transmissions will be offered, with five- and six-speed manuals and automatics. The BLS will sport luxury features such as Bose surround sound and Bluetooth connectivity. On sale in Spring 2006, Cadillac estimates sales of 10,000 annually once production is in full swing. The car will be built at Saab's Trollhattan, Sweden assembly plant, alongside the Saab 9-3.
2007 Dodge Caliber

As the spiritual successor to the Dodge Neon, the Caliber will offer more function with a sporty five-door configuration but offers a coupe-like profile. The versatile platform will be modified for use in the Jeep Patriot and Compass models, and serve as a performance test-bed for Dodge. Expect the Caliber to be marketed as a bigger, better compact car, with all the practicality of an SUV. Powertrain options will follow other platform models with the new 2.4-liter I-4 gas engine, as well as the 2.0-liter direct-injection turbodiesel for international markets. Both will have DaimlerChrysler’s CVT2 for improved fuel economy and seat-of-the-pants power feel.
2007 Dodge Nitro

Working with the Jeep Liberty platform, Dodge will widen and lengthen the smallish midsize SUV, as well as square off many of the body panels, in order to give it a Dodge flavor. Expect the engine to be the same 3.7-liter V-6, with the very real possibility of an SRT version to follow soon after its 2007 model year introduction. A stiffer suspension, lower profile tires, an all-wheel drive system, and “up-rated” engine package will surely separate the Nitro SRT-6 from the pack.
2007 Ferrari F430 Challenge

Engineered for competition, and built for well-heeled clients, the F430 Challenge elevates the precise F430 road-machine to track readiness. Although it uses the same 490-hp engine, it incorporates significant upgrades, including those not seen in the series with the current 360 Challenge. Drawing from its winning F1 experience, Ferrari has outfitted this new model with a braking system that employs a carbon-ceramic material - a first for a Ferrari production car. It also uses a six-speed electronic gearbox that operates just as in the grand prix car. Significant weight savings add to the performance, thanks to a Lexan windshield, all-carbon-fiber intake plenum cover, and a tailored exhaust system. The electronic differential has been replaced with a mechanical one, and both stability and traction control have been disengaged. There is a “race” setting for the gearbox and engine management system to adapt the car for its bred purpose. The F430 enters competition for 2006, and it will replace the 360 Challenge fully for 2007.

2007 Kia Magentis

Buyers in Europe only have to wait until the spring of 2006 to slide behind the wheel of the all-new Kia Magentis, the firm's latest D-Segment offering and flagship. Based on its new independently developed MG Platform, the Magentis shares few parts with Hyundai-brand products with the exception of some drivetrain components. The MG platform will be used in future for the company's Carens replacement. Intending to be a world car, the Magentis was designed by teams in Korea, the United States, and here in Germany, where the company announced the founding of a new European Headquarters in Frankfurt. The Frankfurt mayor spoke at the car's introduction, and of the firm's commitment to the European market. With its European performance aspirations, Kia offers three powerplants, one fueled by diesel and two by gasoline. The top of the line is a CVVT 2.7-liter V6 with 188 ponies on tap. Interiors in Europe will have special seats with increased side bolsters and interior trim. Kia optimistically expects to sell 99,000 units by the end of next year, with 75,000 going to the U.S. Market, 9000 for Europe and 15,000 for other markets.
2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder

In one of the most crowded, and smallest, booths at the show, Lamborghini proudly displayed the inevitable addition to its bullish stable, the Gallardo Spyder. Considered an all-new model by the specialty car company, the Spyder has several key structural differences from the coupe to shore up the torsional rigidity and stand up to rollovers, including A-pillar and side sill reinforcement. The Spyder is further guarded by an automatic rollover safety system, with protective pop-ups that are integrated with the airbag system. The top mechanism operates via two buttons that can tuck the roof away in 20 seconds. The top folds up, essentially, on top of the engine and is covered by a carbon-fiber hood. The process automatically raises/lowers the rear glass, as the cloth top goes through its motions. The V-10 powertrain has been enhanced to produce 520 horsepower, and the six-speed gearbox has had its ratios adjusted, narrowing the effective gear-ratio spacing.

This isn’t an SUV—it’s a rocketship. Under the hood lies the first application of a new, AMG-developed, 32-valve 6.3-liter V-8 engine that utilizes four continuously variable overhead camshafts to help produce a stunning 503 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque at 5200. Compared with the previous ML55 AMG, that’s a 46 percent increase in power and 23 percent more torque. The potent 6.3-liter mates to an AMG Speedshift 7-speed automatic transmission with three driver-selectable shift modes and shift buttons mounted on the back of the steering wheel. Expect a 0- 60-mph time of under five seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The ML63 also boasts an AMG-tuned Airmatic suspension, standard 19-inch wheels and tires (20-inchers are optional), and aggressive AMG bodywork. The ML63 arrives in the U.S. this spring.

Riding on a wheelbase roughly three inches longer than its predecessor’s, the new S-Class is nearly two inches longer and almost an inch wider -- improving elbow room, rear-seat legroom, and trunk space. Three versions will be available on our shores: the S350 (using the 3.5L/268-hp V-6 from the SLK350), the S500 (powered by a new-generation, 32-valve V-8 making 382 hp), and the S600 (with a V-12 pumped up to 510 hp and 600 pound-feet of torque). The same fabulous seven-speed automatic featured in the 2006 ML will mate to all engines. Inside, the new S gets an iDrive-like Comand controller in the center console. A bounty of safety gear is on board, including Brake Assist Plus (which uses radar sensors for early accident detection), Adaptive Brake Lights, Night View Assist infrared headlamps, and Distronic Plus cruise control, a radar-supported system that works to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead at any speed up to 124 mph; it’s also capable of braking the car to a complete standstill if necessary. Eight other Ecotec engine choices range from a 1.6-liter/100-hp gasoline to 3.0-liter/184-hp CDTI V-6. Following the Astra OPC and Zafira OPC, it extends Opel’s OPC (Opel Performance Center) range of high-performance cars and will also be available as a five-door hatchback and station wagon when it hits Euro dealerships in September. Its IDS-Plus (Interactive Driving System) chassis is optimized for both performance and comfort, and features electrohydraulic steering for precise handling. | After an initial unveiling in Seoul, the Kyron crossover made its European debut in Frankfurt. Penned by British Creative Director Ken Greenley, the Kyron is the company's attack on the emerging sports activity vehicle market around the globe, with consideration given to North America. SsangYong had flirted in the past with the idea of selling in the States and reportedly hasn't lost that ambition. The Kyron is a five-seater with an independent suspension and generous roster of safety gear, including anti-lock brakes with EBD, brake assist, active rollover protection, and hill descent control. The real hook for the SsangYong brand may be the credibility gained from its Mercedes-Benz-sourced engines. Targeting the European market, SsangYong touted the available 2.0L/140-hp common-rail diesel engine, though surely Mercedes could cut loose a more robust powerplant for other markets. | The current Toyota Yaris has been a segment leader since its 1999 introduction, putting tremendous pressure on its replacement, especially as this world car is expected to make its way to America. Nonetheless, Toyota confidently unveiled the next-generation Yaris touting a long list of measurable functional improvements, including the obligatory incremental size increase. Within this larger body is a roomier, more efficiently packaged interior with a flatter floor for improved rear passenger comfort, flat-folding seats, and improved rear cargo storage. The small car features anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist as standard features, along with dual front and side curtain airbags. Driver's knee airbag is optional. Technophiles will appreciate the available stereo with MP3 and WMA playback ability, along with digital signal processing. The thrifty Euro powerplants' output is meager by American standards, ranging from 1.0L/51-hp to 1.4L/90-hp. However, the top engine is a diesel with 190 lb-ft of torque, which should be quite entertaining in such a compact car. Destined to replace the Echo in the United States, this subcompact will make its U.S. debut in November at the SEMA show, hopefully with a more robust engine offering |

Bearing the same name as the Greek goddess of sunrise, Volkswagen’s new Eos four-seat convertible was arguably the bright spot on day one of press days in gray and rainy Frankfurt. Justifying its moniker, the Eos displayed some supernatural powers, i.e. a five-section roof that can transform the two-door from sexy convertible to stylish coupe in just 25 seconds. Moreover, when in coupe form, the roof offers a large, sliding sunroof for some open-air pleasure without full exposure to the elements. Based on the Passat, the Eos can accommodate four adults in comfort, making it a direct competitor to the Volvo C70, Chrysler Sebring, and, dare we say, the Audi A4. When U.S. sales begin in summer 2006, the Eos will offer the Passat’s four- and six-cylinder engine options, thus demanding prices that range from about $25,000 to $30,000. Considering that the New Beetle Convertible is currently the sole drop-top offering in VW’s U.S. lineup, the Eos seems to be a natural fit. And with sales set for sunny summer, the timing couldn’t be anymore perfect. It’s always nice when you have a goddess on your side.

Whether you view the GTI as too fast or too slow, Volkswagen now has just the pocket-rocket for you. VW unveiled two new flavors of its Golf hatchback—the mild GT and the spicy R32—that flank the GTI, giving consumers three hot-hatch options. While it’s less likely the U.S. will get the GT (unfortunate, seeing that it sports VW’s innovative, 170-hp, supercharged and turbocharged “Twincharger” four-cylinder), it’s a near certainty the R32 will return to America—after all, VW needs a performance icon to take on the likes of the Subaru STi and the Mitsubishi Evo. To battle those wasabi-infused Asians, the R32 will again get a 3.2-liter V-6 (now up to 250 hp) mated to a standard six-speed manual or VW’s trick dual-clutch direct-shift gearbox (DSG), either of which routs power to a permanent 4Motion four-wheel-drive system. To differentiate the R32 from lesser Golfs, it’s fitted with more aggressive bodywork, 18-inch wheels, and twin tailpipes; inside, unique gauges, racing-style sport seats, and aluminum pedals do the setting apart. Look for the R32 to go on sale in the U.S. possibly as early as fall 2006.

Based off the new Neon platform with quite a bit of chassis reinforcement, the Jeep Patriot is the more classically Jeep of the two concepts. Enlarged wheel arches, tall and flat body panels, an upright stance, and a seven-slotted grille are all Jeep design cues deliberately intended to perpetuate Jeep’s robust, strong, and capable 4x4 off-road image. With that said, the Patriot is reported to offer a new 4x4 system that most likely includes a low range gear, and surely will include some type of added traction control device that acts much like a limited-slip, with the intent of making the Patriot the most capable vehicle among its competitors (CR-V, RAV4, Sportage, and Escape). For U.S. markets, expect the engine to be the new 2.4-liter I-4 “World Engine,” mated to the new continuously variable transmission. A new 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection diesel will be offered (only for international markets so far) as well. Look for pricing to be aggressive, hovering just above and just below the $16,000 mark. Production versions could make it to dealerships as early as mid-2007, as a 2008 model. |
2008 Volvo C70

After a couple of year’s absence on the market, the Volvo C70 coupe and convertible returns as a coupe and convertible – all in one. The folding hardtop is split into three sections, allowing a long roof over a full four-seat interior. Pininfarina/Webasto will assemble it on the S40 platform in Italy (the old C70 was S60/S80-based). Volvo plans just one engine for the U.S. market when it goes on sale next spring; a 2.5-liter/218-horsepower turbocharged inline five rated 236 lb-ft and offered with manual and automatic transmissions.
BMW X3 Hybrid

The Concept X3 EfficientDynamics applies BMW's latest technology and philosophy to its small SUV, where it balances functionality and driving dynamics with significantly enhanced fuel economy. The system packs efficiently, with both the electric motor and electronic control unit fitting within the existing vehicle. And rather than use a large battery pack, the Concept X3 draws on high-performance capacitors, aka Super Caps. The net effect is that this concept will outgun comparable production X3s, with a 0-60 mph time of approximately 6.7 seconds, while returning 20-percent better fuel economy. The real mechanical miracle is in the Active Transmission, where engineers were able to fit six driving gears, an electric motor, two clutches, and the complete electronics pack within the existing transmission housing. All told, this electric assist adds 41 hp to the mix. With BMW's fat R&D budget and penchant for performance engineering, we have no doubt that it could be an amazing machine, but would the market support an even pricier X3?
Citroen C-SportLounge

Arbiters of sophisticated taste, the French have cooked up another gourmet dish that is a bit rich for our crude Yankee tastes, the C-SportLounge (not to be confused with the C-SpotRun). Designed to be a "fresh interpretation of the grand touring car," the C-SportLounge is a crossover that leans closest to its wagon roots. Looking like an angry catfish, the C-SportLounge has an ultra-low .26 coefficient of drag thanks to much more than a slippery exterior surface. This Citroen cheats the wind and manages lift by using flow-through air ducts on the front bumper, a roof-affixed electro-mechanical system that creates a virtual airfoil, a smooth subframe, and a reverse mobile airfoil under the car's tail. Open the wide, suicide-style doors and it’s clear that the space-age interior makes good use of the chevrons in the company logo, with angled, parallel lines ribbing many surfaces. The bucket seats are deep enough to hold an astronaut in place during takeoffs, and the artfully rendered gauge cluster seems more appropriate for a space ship. Citroen has said that a range of powerplants could motivate the C-SportLounge, suggesting either some semblance of production consideration, or indecision.
Daihatsu Copen ZZ

We've seen the Copen concepts, the production models, and now again, a new concept. An adorable, retro-flavored convertible, the Copen makes us smile at each showing. This time, the Copen has been sheathed in slightly larger bodywork that preserves the distinctive teardrop shape, and then fitted with a higher-performance, naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine. The upgrades continue with a suspension tuned for greater handling. Daihatsu claims the "ZZ" name represents the unknown, but in looking at this mild update to the brand's most personable car, it seems a forgone conclusion that this mildly upfitted convertible will roll into production. Next time, we hope to see a more aggressive effort made, with an eye on countering the MazdaSpeed MX-5.
Daihatsu D-Compact 4x4

Looking like Son of RAV4, the D-Compact 4x4 made its world debut in Frankfurt. The five-passenger sport/cute brings traditional SUV elements of command seating, all-weather traction, and flexible interior to the city. Its small size makes it friendly for negotiating narrow, European cobblestone streets, or securing a coveted parking space in Japan. Larger than the Daihatsu Terios sport/cutey, this concept hits a more comfortable size while maintaining the fuel efficiency, acquisition cost, and maneuverability its pocketable dimensions bring. The concept has a true 4WD system with a locking center differential, and it boasts such safety equipment as vehicle stability control. Power comes from a corporate 1.5L/105-hp inline four. Safe bet this little guy is headed for production.
