Short Story Competition - April 2009

jsarnold
Following on from Truespeed's great idea, here is the next installment in the Frihost bimonthly writing competition.

Last time the short story had to be written within the topic of 'Love'.

This time you are given the first line from a short story. It's up to you to decide the genre, topic and style.

Your short story must begin with the following line:

"It wasn't the first time, he thought. But it would certainly be the last."

The deadline for the submission of entries is Friday 27th April.

Please DO NOT post your entries here. All entries should be sent by PM to me, jsarnold.

Any questions, post them here.

The prizes are in Frihost dollars, as follows:

1st Prize - 1000 $
2nd prize - 600 $
3rd Prize - 400 $

If you are interested in being a judge, please PM me to let me know.

Good luck, and happy writing!

Thanks Truespeed, maybe for the next contest I can put it in my signature. Will probably have to bug you again for the script Embarassed

I think I'll be giving this one a try (knock wood). I need a break from the novel-length thing I'm working on.
truespeed
This needs to be made into a featured discussion, otherwise it relies on people finding this thread or clicking on one of our signatures.
jsarnold
I know - I have asked rvec to do that, and he has passed the request on to the admins to move the thread to the same promoted position as the last comp. So far the admins haven't done anything, but hopefully someone should get round to it quite soon.
Noremac
Actually going to get an entry in for this one, promise, will you be the judge, jsarnold?
I'm excited because the topic gives me a bit more freedom than the last.

I'm happy to be another judge too, if needed.
jsarnold
Glad to hear it!

I've had a couple of entries already - but there's still plenty of time left.

I will be happy to be one of the judges, but would rather that there was a panel judging the stories in order to be much fairer.

I have had one volunteer judge contact me - but if anybody else is interested in helping to judge the competition, please let me know by PM.

Just to point out also, you can't be a judge if you submit a story.

Blimey, that was quick, and good to hear, hopefully you will get many more, mine is finished, but it needs padding out as its only 800 words.

Despite my very limited amount of time, I have written a story this time... I managed to fit it in between school and work... I just need to have a few friends proof read it before I send it... And I also need to edit the language to make it appropriate for these forums (when I write, I tend to write what people would actually say in a situation - so if someone's hurt, for instance, I am quite prone to writing swear words).

Swear words should be ok,mine has lots of them,it never even occurred to me that i might have to edit them out. Unless there is a forum rule somewhere forbidding the use of swear words, then i say keep them in.

Do not attempt to cuss or bypass the filter. Bypassing the filter may result in your entire post getting snipped.

That came from the forum rules... So if there's a cussing filter, I'd assume that cussing is not allowed. If it was "light" swear words like damn or ass, then I'd leave them. But my story contains excessive use of "f*ck."

Although I would like to leave all the swear words in the story as to preserve the story and the theme (I tried writing a short story with message in it)... It just doesn't preserve the message without some of the swear words... So I think I'm just going to send the original (after my friends proof read it) anyways and update it later if a moderator tells me to...

Edit: I just submitted it... I'm a poor writer but I can occasionally come up with good ideas...
truespeed
I am sure a mod will read this post and give us some guide line on wether they are allowed or not,i can understand them not being allowed in posts, but this is different,so within the context of a story,i hope that common sense prevails.

Otherwise (for example - should there be a gangster story) We will have dialogue along the lines of the old 1930's jimmy cagney movies ,like "You dirty rat"

Thats like me,i can come up with the idea, but lack the writing skill to execute them.
hamza1122
Hey, this looks like a fun compettion i might join if i have the time.
jsarnold
As far as swearing is concerned, although personally I'm not fond of it, I realise that if art is to imitate life realistically. it's going to occur. Having said that, the power of such words is often in their restricted, rather than prolific use.

In terms of posting, if a story contains strong language then rather than posting it on here, I'd post a link to it, with a warning that the language may offend sensitive readers.

I can understand you not wanting to be a judge,as you will be aware who wrote what, whereas the other judges won't,so they can't be influenced in any way by who the author is.

At the same time as an author yourself,it would be good to get your feedback. Perhaps you could let the 3 chosen judges decide who wins, and even though your not part of the decision making process, perhaps you could still add your comments after each story.
jsarnold
Certainly I'll be happy to provide feedback on all stories. I think you were a judge weren't you Truespeed?

But as you say, I'll be aware of who wrote what, and that might provide an unfair slant. I can forward all entries anonymously to the panel.

I have one judge so far, so if anyone is interested in being a judge, please let me know.

I was yes,but only because i couldn't get a 3rd judge at short notice,i like to think that my knowing who wrote what didn't affect my choice though.
jsarnold
Well of course in the first competition you didn't know much about each entrant. This time round we've seen some of the previous work from people, and know a little more about some of them.

I can enlist my son as a judge, but as he's only three years old he'll probably pick the winner whose story has the largest number of pictures of dinosaurs on it.

Yeah I need to learn how to be a better writer... I have written a few good things in the past but not many... I did think that I came up with a decent theme on this story and I tried to provide a morale lesson....
Noremac
Just sent my entry to JSarnold. Can't wait for a response.
jsarnold
Thank you to all those who have already submitted entries. I am sure there are more to come over the remaining period.

To date I have but one judge!

If you would be interested in becoming a judge, please let me know. There are only 3 rules to being a judge:

1. You cannot also be an entrant
2. You must be able to read
3. You must be able to form opinions

Oh, and being able to hit the keyboard in ways which makes reasonable sense also helps!

I could really do with at least another two judges, so if you're interested, or know someone else who might be, please drop me a line.
Crazy_Canuck
Interesting starting point. I'll have to think about this one some more.
Noremac
Love to help out, but as I am an entrant I think I'll help judge in the next competition.
Cliffer
happy to hear that! if sb can write a good story,i think we should make it a movie
Afaceinthematrix
I can't wait until this story contest is over... I want to see the results
jsarnold
The entries and the comments seem to have hit a dry patch. Don't forget you only have about two weeks to go now.

I have one judge so far. Please - if you have any interest at all in volunteering as a judge, that would be great.

Otherwise I will give the stories to my three year old. You have been warned.
truespeed
Maybe you should do what i did,and just pm people you think will make good judges.
georgeodowd
Well, I've ended up having far less time than I thought I would. I'm debating between volunteering for judging and writing an entry... Maybe I'll try my hand at the writing first, and if that doesn't pan out, I'll volunteer as a judge.
truespeed
JS have you got your quota of judges yet?

Also,re: your original post,the 27th isn't a friday its a monday.
Noremac
Looks like jsarnold has made off with those frih$!

Just kidding.
jsarnold
Hi, sorry for the delay in sorting the results out, but I have just moved house, and only just managed to find my computer!

If you could give me a couple of days to sort things out - unfortunate timing I know, but hey ho. Took me 3 days to find my kettle...
Noremac
Take your time, hope you have an easy move.
truespeed

truespeed
jsarnold if your still around and don't want to complete this contest,pm me all the stories with their respective usernames and i will organize some judges and publish the results.
