I would like to install my old hard drive (with Windows XP) into my new computer(Vista)to rescue some files. The old HD uses an IDE cable, but the master in my new one does not. I have set the old hd from master to slave, connected it via IDE cable to the motherboard with the slave connection on the hard drive side.
However when I start the computer up with it connected, the PC starts in Windows XP and tells me I must register this version of windows before I can proceed.
At this point I assume since it did not start in Vista, my pc thinks the old hard drive is the master and shut it off. What am I doing wrong? Is there an easy way for me to connect my old hard drive to retrieve files then use it as extra storage? Any help is greatly appreciated.
