"Bushvilles": tent cities increasing in USA

handfleisch
In the 1930s the tent cities and shantytowns of poor people in the US were called "Hoovervilles". Now they are coming back, and if they keep expanding (Seattle, Reno, Sacramento and Nashville are a few places documented so far), will they be called "Bushvilles"?

Is it time for a tent city in Dallas?

Why Bushvilles? I would call them Bankvilles, or better yet, name the tent cities after all the Banks and companies that have been bailed out courtesy of the American people of the US.

More like Creditvilles, if it wasn't for people using ridiculous amounts of credit way beyond their means most of them most certainly wouldn't be in that position. Bush had very little to do with the place our economy is in today, but like he has been in the past 8 years he is a very easy target and makes a wonderful scapegoat for just about anything that goes wrong in our country. Either way it's good to see people joining together and forming their own communities. It's too bad to see them not even trying to make it anywhere in life though.

I would think that the people living in tents there have much more trouble with the ridiculously overinflated real-estate prices in California than with Bush's policies.

Hoover didn't seem to do much either, but they still named the shantytowns after him.

Considering that, perhaps we should name them after the current president?

Only in the US, in many other countries people can't afford tents.
coolclay
Very true Carlospro, it's not really like you need a tent to live outdoors anyway. It's not that hard to live outdoors without a tent.

That depends on the climate.
In California it would be fine, but where I live those staying in a tent would run a huge risk of freezing to death.

Laughing exactly, if people can make it though history, then what can stop us now? I guess civilization and our modern lifestyle are our main obstacles, since most of us would have no idea of how to survive anymore in the beginning, but I think eventually we would get the hang of things, like we have throughout our existence.

This is a new consequence of the economic crisis I think... Confused
