CS4 Suite

michaeljscott93
What do you think of the new CS4 suite, more specially Photoshop Very Happy

Is it worth getting or do you think CS3 is adequate?
Ghost Rider103
I personally do not think it is worth the change.

I do have the CS4 Master Collection, however being used to CS3 interface, I still use CS3 most of the time.

Perhaps when CS5 comes out I will make the dedication to adapt to a new style. But for now, CS3 is just as good as CS4.

Though CS4 does have the really cool 3D feature. However I do my 3D work in other programs.

Thanks for the advice Very Happy

Is the interface so different that you prefer to use CS3? I almost got the CS4 Upgrade. Now I am in doubt...

Which 3D Program do you use? Blender?
Ghost Rider103
It isn't that much different, since you can customize the interface how you want it, on each version. However the way you customize them seemed to be more difficult in CS4. I had a problem making them fit correctly.

For example, I would want to get my colors in the middle of everything, but on its own separate dialog box, but for some reason I couldn't do that, it kept going into my layers dialog box.

Plus everything does look a little different in CS4, like colors and some things are a bit smaller.

There isn't that big of a difference, but I just prefer CS3 interface over CS4, but only because I am more used to CS3 I think.

If you are that worried about it, just download the free trial and see if it's for you or not.

It's not like it will be a mistake going to CS4. No doubt it will be a positive update for you. I personally use the programs on a daily basis, and absolutely need to feel comfortable throughout a daily basis to keep my work top notch, and don't have time to get used to a new interface.

Hope this helps some.

I use Cinema 4D for 3D work. I also use Terragen for generating terrains and such, which I think counts as 3D.

Thanks for the comment. I'll follow your advice and download the trial version first.

Cinema 3D is a comercial software, right? I would use it too little to be worth it purchasing an expensive software. Now, upgrading to CS4 could be a good deal. I'll see.

CS3 is adequate, though I do like the new interface. It's closer to Fireworks and the rest of that whole macromedia suite, the image editor that I really like. If you'd rather have tabs than windows on photoshop, then perhaps you might want to give it a whirl.

You should get a few demos and try it out for yourself, that way you'll know for sure... each one is only a few hundred megabytes... for most people I don't see a point in upgrading to CS4 just yet, there's still a few bugs in the apps (in CS3 apps as well!!!) so hold your horses matey and you shall win the prix.

I have tried the CS4 collection and from what I have tested, it is very similar to CS3. That being said it is still worth it but if you already have CS3, don't get CS4. It is too pricey and it doesn't have that many changes between the two versions. It is up to you, I personally am sticking with CS3 it is cheaper now and almost the same as CS4. I hope I could help you.

I'm still on cs3 and dont really see any reason to upgrade to cs4. I do mostly retouching and the only feature thats new that would benefit me would be the dodge and burn tool now has the check box option to retain skin tones. Apart from that cs3 does all that i need it to do. I'll probably skip this version out and wait for cs5 or cs6.

Im used to CS3 so i don't have any reason to upgrade to CS4 but upgrading will not hurt so i'll try upgrading soon. Razz

Take a look at what you think you will be using the programs in the suite for and what are the differences between the two. Unless there are a lot that you think you would routinely use, CS3 is probably a better option and likely will be far cheaper. You can upgrade in the future and you can skip versions but still qualify for the upgrade price (i.e. go from CS3 to CS5 once it comes out)

I got my CS4 cd last saturday, now im addicted to CS4, it's cool

I'm still using CS3 and I dont think i'm going to upgrade to CS4 ... I'm not missing any of the new features..

I'll probally wait until CS5 comes out..

I agree that CS3 is a pretty solid version, and new features in CS4 aren't substantial enough to force people to upgrade.. rather, I found the new tab feature a little abit annoying Confused . it seems that i can't drag multiple pictures into the UI at the same time, while in CS3 I could do this easily.

I have both CS4 and CS3 on different computers.
CS3 is a very good program, solid, robust and has never failed me yet.
CS4 just seems like an expansion to CS3, rather than being an entire new program suite. While it does have several new feautures, I do not believe it was worth the licensing fee they are asking for it, and my advice is to stick with CS3 if you already have it and avoid going to CS4 for as long as possible.

Does CS4 really have a tab feature similar to Visual Studio? Or did I read its specs wrong?
Also I assumed that if you got one of their suites, then instead of opening multiple programs (like Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, etc.) you just opened one single window for the suite application, and opened whatever program's funcionality you wanted within it as a separate tab.
If it does have that functionality, then it's really cool, and CS4 is for me. If I read/understood wrong, then I'll stick to CS2 for now.

CS4 is much light as CS3. Maybe vista is give some motivation this way.
Alaskacameradude
Well, I'd go with CS4 if it was me.......but everyone has their own opinions.

The main reason Adobe is giving for hawking CS4 over 3 are the performance enhancements. I guess it is designed to run faster.
Honestly, it would be great if they just fixed all the bugs.
Chinmoy
it is a thousand times lighter than the previous cs4. Atleast my slow PC can run it properly. but never use the portable versions. they use more resource thant the regular ones..
Ghost Rider103
When I used CS4 I honestly didn't notice any difference performance wise. Though this could be due to me having a very strong and fast computer.

I don't really see them making much progress in CS4 performance wise. I think they just added a few new advanced tools/options. I'm sure they have fixed a few bugs as well.

I only know of one bug in CS3, and i can make the program fail and abort at any time. I wont explain it. Though it's quite hard to come across on making CS3 fail or get any errors for that matter. I spend hours in a lot of different Adobe CS3 programs daily, and I have only ran into a few minor errors.

I still use CS4, but I never did buy the CS4 suite. I've had the CS3 suite since it came out. I don't plan on buying the full suite until a CS5 comes out.
arnaw_kumar
I have two systems- one of them is four years old and supplemented by fx 5200. CS4 loads much faster and works miracurously better on slow systems. This difference is negligible for new and fast systems. So consider buying it only if you have a slow system
PleoMaster
I love CS4 to be honest its alot better than CS2 and CS3,

Has alot more features, better design and easy management i reckon you should get it Smile
Ghost Rider103
Could you please explain to us all the features that Photoshop CS4 has that CS3 doesn't? I know there is a few, but not a lot at all. The ones they did add, are not so useful. They are techniques that aren't hardly used.

Also, the design of CS4 is almost identical to CS3. They have a slight color change, and the layout is not much different.

Better management? I'd like to hear more of how the "management" is any better.
