Trun Autorun off for Flash Drives

Possum
Hi

Due a worm, my service provider has warned me to turn Autorun off for my Flash Drive.

I have Googled this has have found complicated registry hacks.

Is there a simple way to turn Autorun off for my Flash Drive

Try USB Firewall: http://net-studio.org/application/usb_firewall.php
And use Flash Disinfector: http://experi3nc3.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/flash-disinfector-by-subs/

Windows is ridiculous in this respect, the only way to turn it off properly is by modifying the registry.
I'd much rather do that than install more software!

Remember you can get the changes you need as a .reg file so you have it saved if you ever need to do it again and don't need to manually trawl through the directories in regedit and can just double-click.

Delete or rename the autorun.ini file.

By that point, you have already activated the autorun (possibly a virus) that's on the drive...

If you are running a decent (non-Norton) anti-virus package with real-time scanning capabilities, this is not a problem.

Here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715/. That's the official Microsoft answer on how to disable autorun. It is frustrating that you must dig into the registry, but if you make sure you are following the instructions, you are quite safe.

What about changing autorun.inf? :O Panda Security has created a program that blocks automatically running a USB stick that has been infected. It also blocks out access to anybody that wants to edit / modify the autorun.inf. This is standalone program, therefore you vaccinate once and you're done. You're able to download the program from below:

So the Autoplay --> "Take no action" option on the device properties don't work? The only solution is trough the registry?

This is what I did: Type this in Notepad

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
@="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

and save it as a .reg file, then run it, and it stops the autoplay/run
