Cali considers legalization of marijuana for tax revenue

quex
The economic collapse may very well take possession laws down with it.

The state of California is considering legislation to make marijuana a legal, taxable product for its citizens, under essentially the same laws that govern consumption of alcohol. Cali is desperately in need of tax revenues to save its economy, hit by several years' worth of built-up deficit and a dismal outlook in the face of falling home prices and rising unemployment rates.

Pro-marijuana sentiment has been quietly strengthening along the west coast for many decades now, but was consistently ignored by the government under the past three administrations; could it be a monetary crisis that finally pushes cannabis into legality?

Innnnnteresting.

There are many good arguments for legalizing marijuana, but fixing the state's budget shouldn't be one of them. 100% of the taxes on it should go to drug rehab programs and for funding the regulation of it.

Better reasons:
Free up prison space taken up by marijuana-related offenses.
Deprive gangs/organized crime of a good income source.
Free up police time to work on worse problems.
Let people make their own decisions.

Agreed. And add to the list; better availability to the terminally ill... right now, the circus you have to go through to get access to medical marijuana is so ridiculous that very few patients live long enough for their applications to be processed.

I'm sorry, what? o.o

Do you mean to say that lobbyists will swamp the state legislature to protest...? Or that lobbyists will be rejected for suggesting legalization? Because if it's the latter, please note that it's a state assemblyman who has brought this proposal to the floor.

I support legalization.

I was just making a random remark on how ridiculous it is that it hasn't been legalized yet, as well as a random remark on how ridiculous the reasons were for making it illegal in the first place.

California is one of the States that are in deepest debt. Probably this is one of the reasons for it, grasping at straws instead of going for fundamental painful cuts in Government? They are spending their energy in the wrong direction?

Sounds like an interesting move for cali. I believe marijuana can have an adverse effect on people who turn to it in times of desperation or despair but for those with self control and in good mental health it can be an enjoyable experience. In any case it is good to see some freedom given to the people of cali on this matter.
