Nigerian police detain goat over armed robbery

POLICE in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.
Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.

"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed said.

"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.

Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.

Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Hehe. Those Nigerian people are sharp ones. I wish them luck in proving it scientifically Razz

Actually, if they're able to prove this scientifically it may be useful information to further Ocalhoun's equine dream ^^

Hire a translator and put the goat on a lie-detector test!

Wahhaha... things get weirder by the day. Maybe they will charge the goat, sentence it to death by electrocution then have a nice roast lamb dinner after the execution. They probably locked it up and still waiting for it to 'change' back to human form.

i agree that this seems quite funny to ppl having grown up in the developed world - including me.

but for indiginous people here in africa this is a quite believable occurence. go back in history far enough in developed countries and stories like that abound in every culture.

the real clash comes obviously when local believe systems clash with modern ones and the copper asks to prove scientifically that the goat actually is the accused perpetrator.

hhuuummmmmm
i think NOT.

Come off it Icecool. This is misrepresenting African countries who are generally quite shrewd in matters of goats. What is true is that the goat no doubt represents a good size value, and is probably being held as a ransom of a kind. It may lead to the apprehension of whoever the police is looking for.

my mistake - i should have said "the gambia" and not generalised as africa.

i have lived here now for over 5 years as part of the local community managing a local charity - NOT and international ngo but a tru community organisation. i am in contact with other expats but i mostly move within the local ethnic groups.

i am glad that you have such good first hand information in terms of holding goats for ransom - i dont know where YOU live but it may be common practice there.

maybe it would help YOU to read the original post in more detail:

i just pointed out that YES, indiginous people do believe in things like that and it is a daily struggle here to try to introduce more "modern" facts and believes to a large part of an uneducated, iliterate and isolated population.

My opinion hardly matters icecool. And obviously I do not have first hand information. But point taken. No offense intended. I also come from Africa, but oviously have never lived in Nigeria. Interesting to learn that black magic is common practice there. I did not know that. I thought it had been meant as a joke and the police had been playing along.

if you also come from africa and have ever been involved with the local community you may have come accross similar stories or occurences. i do admit that as a caucasian person it does take time to be accepted as an equal in terms of sharing local information and folklore.

i am not sure if black magic is common practice - i sure never have seen a man turned into a goat. but what i do know and what i was trying to highlight is that the BELIEVE in black magic is very common.

and no offence taken
cheers

My limited sharing of folklore was to put the iron frame of a bed on top of bricks, otherwise the spirits would take you away at night. I'm glad the people I associated with were not into black magic stuff, as that is not really my cup of tea any way. I'm more interested in stories about ancestors which I got in abundance as a small child. You're right about admission as a caucasian person, but for caucasian children it is different. I did not feel any race boundaries as a child. I think I was lucky in that way and even when I became an adult. Anyway, that was a long time ago.
