| I don't think this has to do with tracking and identity. Often you want to know where people visit your website from, and IPs are a known way to to do this because they contain geographical information. IPs numbers are a common way to be uniquely identified in the internet because you don't want people (or computers) to confuse you with another computer and send you the wrong data. |

To add on to what I said. I guess they can be used as a form of tracking, but generally that's not the case. I think you would need some extra information. |
