Is Cooking a hobby?
Afaceinthematrix
Sure. I'd consider it a hobby for some. Why not? It did get its own thread...
atul2242
A new recipe straight from the village

Very Hot Chutney
Equal quantity of Green Chilly & Garlic mashed together
with salt and khatai ( dry mango kernel powder ) or amchur
and some mustard oil

stays good for a month

so are we supposed to write a quick recipe or just reply wether cooking is a hobby or not. well it can be a hobby to some and a profession to some others. and what do you say to housewives who cook for their families daily?
deanhills
It can be a hobby, and a very specialist one as well. Some people like to do fancy baking with decoration, others like to specialize in exotic cooking. Some people actually relax when they are cooking and like to do this over a number of hours with friends as guests.
Garga
Absolutely Yes! a hobby and professional.People love that, and sometimes as a hobby for the sake of the sick Smile because everybody can not do lunch Smile
atul2242
Daily cooking is work for the house-parent - True
It is pleasurable - T/F/Maybe/Sometimes

So cooking is /can be a hobby / profession / or just work ( in most houses unpaid and unappreciated)

Of course Smile It's one of mine, too.

I believe that cooking can be a hobby.

The dictionary defines a hobby as ... an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation, not as a main occupation.

Cooking, such as for your family, could also be fun, or it could be a bore, a chore or downright drudgery. THAT will depend on how you view the act of cooking ... and also how your efforts in the kitchen are received by your family. Everyone likes to be appreciated, even if you just heated up some franks and beans. Cool

If you do find cooking to be a boring chore, try out some new recipes or techniques. There are dozens of cooking shows on TV. LOL. And you don't have to buy cookbooks, you can go to the library and either read them there for free (even without a library card) or you can check them out and take them home, if you do have a card.

Just my 2 cents,
Chad Smile

Why don't we get those merged togeather? Smile

Anyhow, ofcourse it's a hobby. For some even a job, and defenetly something considered that one can master.
One only need to learn the basics of it to survive, but why stop there? I think when crossing that border, when
trying to make more out of it, it becomes a hobby. One collect recepies, try different spices, does themes...
The possibilities are endless, and the restaurantes many. Different approaches and many type of chefs. But, one
doesn't have to be a chef to cook - it can simply be ones hobby.
pho3nixsky
Yes it can be, but its generally 'a must do this thing' since you need to cook to survive life and enjoy it. If you have a passion for learning new food recipes or generally cook for fun, i guess you can say its a hobby.
soljarag
yeah, if you enjoy it, then its a hooby Razz

I really like to cook. I enjoy the challenge of having 4 or 5 separate parts of the meal simultaneously becoming ready for presentation at approximately the same time. Every week, my girlfriend and I try 2 or 3 new recipes. Most turn out really good!

I prefer the cookbooks that have big, appealing pictures of what the recipe's final product should look like.
nigam
surely it is a hobby.....id love creating and discovering new recipes....

indeed, way not?
every think you do can be youre hobby.. as long you like to do it
natilovesmike
It depends on why you do it, if you do it just to feed your family, but you don't really enjoy it, then no. If you are a professional cheff and cooking is the way you make your living, then no. But if you do it because you enjoy it and enjoy looking for new dishes, cook for your friends or sometimes you seel it, but you really don't get any significant income from it, then yes.

My sister study to become a cookier. Its a hobby and is not very easy llike appear.
She need to improve all ingredients and make things who make us "remember good things" when eating.

I love all things she makes. The taste is very good. Unfortunally, in my country is hard found a job how a chef cook.
So, is just one hobby for her.
jabce85
yes, it is definitely a hobby.. if it is something that you enjoy doing and always are working to get better at, then it is a hobby
kody
Cooking is a great hobby. I highly recommend you start with some Jamie Oliver recipes to kick up your cooking level a notch or two. He always seems to think of imaginative combinations of common items and the results are always superb!!!

All his recipes are available for free on his website too. Amazing stuff!!!!

Also, check in to the stuff he's been doing for the UK school system. Brilliant!!!
fx-trading-education
Yes cooking can be definitely a hobby.

For some people even eating is a hobby !
lethaltriad
Yeah I believe cooking can be a hobby, my friend used to cook as a hobby before she decided to go culinary school and take it up as a profession. I have alot of friends that do enjoy cooking also just havent had the chance to take it to then next level.

So is cooking still a hobby if it's your profession?
youandmephotography
I would agree that cooking is indeed a hobby, as well as an art. Moreso on the hobby side, since some people like to cook in their free time. And honestly, cooking is as good a hobby as anything in my opinion, and I really wish I had more time to explore this as a hobby. Perhaps next year when I have more time in my schedule I can try this as a hobby.

Does cooking in this thread cover both baking and cooking? I would say that these are two different hobbies
kody
Why would you say they're two different hobbies?
youandmephotography
I think that baking (i.e. desserts etc.)
is different than cooking, as in preparing traditional foods.

I couldn't think of a better term earlier, sorry Neutral

But if you think about it, both cooking and baking have different aspects of art to them.

On one hand, one must be very imaginative to prepare a dessert and style the decorations to match the flavors and type of dessert.

For cooking, one must prepare a tasty meal, which involves the mixture of different and various spices and salts.

again, this is all opinionated
kody
Hahaha, just realized the title of this post is "hooby"...

I guess it could be considered a hobby.

Hobby = n., pl. -bies.
An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

So, I guess if you're main goal is just having fun, yes, cooking can be your hobby.
kody
Is it still a hobby if you eat it afterwards then? Just as long as you enjoy it I guess?
shkumbin
I would agree too that cooking is a hobby for some, (for some mothers who have 2 jobs its ain in the ass ) but for some who have time and want to enjoy something special yeah they cook for themselves and it's a hobbie Smile
kody
It's often a pain in the ass!
hamza1122
Anything you enjoy doing is a hobby. If you like cooking then cooking is a hobby.
kody
I enjoy drinking coffee in the morning. Is that a hobby or routine?
youandmephotography
Well what kinds of coffee do you enjoy? Do you enjoy certain ways of preparing the coffee? Ice? No Ice?

As you can see, you have ways of getting or making or having your coffee the way you like, which contrasts to other's tastes as well.

I guess you could say that those little things you do to make your coffee taste the best in your opinion make drinking coffee a hobby right?

^ Devil's Advocate...
kody
Not really though... I just fill up a cup o' joe and drink!

Wouldn't call it a hobby.
patchworkepiphany
if you do it simply because you love to, yes for sure that is a hobby!! Talkiing about it on a forum is probably a good sign it may be as well Very Happy (its one of my hobby's! i collect cookbooks too lol)

It's more of an office addiction rather than breakfast enjoyment for me...

I really enjoy cooking, I like to create new recipes, zo I guess it is one of my hobies!
During the week I cook ordinary things, but in the weekend, or when we have guests, we, yes alsomy husband likes cooking, try some new recipes.
anaela

Do you have to learn from something for it to be a hobby?
littleladyluck
Of course cooking is a hobby. It demands efforts, talent. You share recipes with friends, strangers. Display your cooking skills during social gatherings. I believe that It is a very gratifying hobby. You should have a sweet tooth though lol. My aunt makes cakes for many occasions and sometimes takes some orders. She loves it. Yeah, it demands time too.

That's a good description I think.
Greatking
yes cooking can be a hobby i think. its no more as exclusive as it used to be. womens office as some people will call it. a man can equally cook and man can it be delicious! some have taken up cooking as their business. like restaurants etc. some also cook for fun. so i guess its only different when you find your self doing the cooking as a hobby or as a profession.
Kohi
I would consider it more of a hobby then art. Mainly beacuse people enjoy cooking and use it as a stress revealer. That is only if they can cook. It does take effort, like all hobbies do.

I say if you enjoy it, it should be a hobby. Otherwise, it's just a chore, like doing laundry and mopping the floor. And I think we can all agree that those don't qualify as hobbies...

Hm... You mean all this time I've been under the impression that my wife has been having hobbies while I'm at work, but she's just been doing chores?!? Wink
