Movie Effects??

speeDemon
Ok, well, you all have seen the 2 kinds of films or movies, which you get from

1) Your own video cameras,
2) Videos which can be seen in films, advertisements.. etc..

You can see a different kind of effect of more color richness or something in the ads or films...

you dont get the same thing with your own video cameras, do you..

I wanted to know how those people make those kind of videos, its like, a typical "movie" kind of video, I mean, if you look at older films, of the 80s or so, then there was another typical "movie" kind of video, which you couldn't acheive using a normal V.camera...

I am pretty sure that its the editing, and not the camera that makes the video "movie" like.... (duh!)

Ok, so please just tell me that what kind of software am I looking for... and ya, can you give me some more details on 3D max and stuff, I mean, I think that stuff is only for 3D modeling.. but I guess it can also be used for video editing...

Also, can you give me details on any software that can be use for video editing, as in, not just the picture richness and color, but editing like.. hm... picture in picture, or.. transitions and stuff which look proffessional!

Just looking for some great answers!

usually, not only one soft be used, you may look for :
3dmax or maya for modelling and animation, and some effects.
ae,or fusion or cb for effects.
premiere or vegas ... for final editing.

The major thing that separates home videos from professional videos is the lighting and camera quality. The editing process does have something to do with the difference but most of that comes from color correction. My main advice, however, is to get better at lighting scenes properly.

i use fusion and cb sometimes,it has many functions.you can adjust or make the effects you want, including lighting and quality.not only color correction.color correction is just a basic function.

Isnt it filters?!
EximiusNero
If you look at any behind the scenes footage of any movies you will see that they do not look "movie like". Most of that is done with video software filters and effects. Adobe After Effects is a more professional program but great if you can get your hands on it.

Yeah it's mostly filters. final cut pro does it on mac and pretty much any semi-pro program for windows will do it. You can get the same 'movie' effect from any video camera, just the quality of the image will be worse.

If you use After Effects you'll also have to purchase additional 3rd party color correction filters. The ones that come bundled with it aren't usually up to the mark.

Google "film look"

There are differences in the cameras used for movies. One thing is they shoot in 24 frames per second. You can convert to this format (but you need more expensive software for it to work well and keep audio in sync). If you use 24fps on a lower end camera that offers 24p, it is not true 24fps, but it will give you a similar look.

Other than that, if you film with proper lighting, you can use adobe after effects and magic bullet looks to get some nice film effects. http://vimeo.com/videos/search:magic%20bullet%20looks

What about Windows Movie Maker? Laughing

Umm I doubt it can get you a film look. But maybe, if you have some more advanced filters for it. Does WMM even have color editing controls like levels and curves?

If it was as easy as just getting Final Cut or After Effects or 3D Max, than movies would not cost
so much to make. I run my own one person video production company. I have also worked
on the set of several movies. First big difference is MONEY. On big movies, they have the money
for high end lighting gear (which is a big part of the 'film look'). They also can use high end
HD or film cameras which give you up to like 11 stops of latitude. And then, there is the fact
that on a movie set, they have the money to pay for like 500 different people, each specializing
in one thing. There will be several people in the 'camera department', several in the 'lighting department' then there are 'grips' to help with the camera movement (set up dolly and
tracks for the nice tracking shots you get in movies) or steadicam ops to give the smooth
motion tracking shots......and that is BEFORE we get to the post productions stage. There they
have editors, assistant editors, VFC (Visual effects) creators, colorists and so on.
So really, if you, by yourself, are trying to emulate a big budget movie,
you are trying to do the job of hundreds of people, AND do it with a cheapo camera?
Not really going to happen. You just do the best you can, maybe crush the blacks and
pop the whites a little to give your image more contrast, add or subtract a little saturation
from your image and add a little color cast. Pretty much any NLE (outside of the freebies
like Windows Movie Maker) can do these adjustments for you. You can drop a filter on it
to convert it to 24 frames per second if you want that look. So basically, you can tweak things
and try to start heading in the direction of a big budget movie, but really you have to be realistic
about this. You can head in that direction, but you are not going to get all the way there
unless you have at least a little money to spend.

3dmax or maya is great. movies with animationalways use them. the spiderman movie animations were made with maxon 4d. Effects are just awesome.

Or you could just listen to what Alaskacameradude has to say.

I really respect the guy, seems to have a great knowledge about cinematography, post production and the film-making process.
