What do you have to do to get Google Analytics working?

I believe you need to create a site map and upload it.. (HOW)

You need to put a Google Analytics text string in each of your web pages (What is this String and where does it go.?)

Basically:

1. Go to the Google Analytics site.
2. Create an account or login.
3. Get a 'code snippet' to add to your site's template.
4. Upload modified pages.
5. Start getting information from Analytics.

It is not too difficult, the instructions on the Google site are pretty straightforward.

It's really simple to make it running.
Just signup/in to the analytics account and add your website. Google will ask you to verify your website and gives you the code to past it in your index.htm page. You can also verify by making a weird looking web page as directed by them but pasting a code is easy thing to do. then you are done.

Yes, it's very easy, after your site verified what you have to do is only paste your tracking code on each pages you want to track. After that Google will report all about your site's traffic on your Analytic reporting page.
