Could you Describe MySQL as a FREE OPEN SOURCE data base

Possum
Hi

I know MySQL is free to download and use. But is it totally free. Or do you have to pay if you are commercial?

I believe it is owned by SUN. Is this true?

MySql has packages much like many antivirus companies. A free package, and a corporate package. I'm pretty sure you can use the free package even if you are corporate.

Yep, it is free. I don't understand why there is a payed version but whatever. And yes, it is owned by Sun.

I think the paid version is for extra support.

The program itself is totaly free under GNU GPL so you can use it to whatever you like, there is no paid versions of it.
Sun's "paid versions" contains service and support.

... but it's not a "database" tho..
it is a database management system, while the "language" used in this DBMS is also known as "MySQL" Confused

the free version is open source. you can tinker with the source code if you are a guru at cpp...
However, the enterprise edition features many optimizations, security audit, support and automatic security alerts, etc.
