For the first two may I point you rather obviously in the direction of their somewhat informative website!!!
http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla.html

As for its disadvantages, the problem with Joomla is that if the specific feature you're looking for doesn't exist already... you're going to have to code it yourself. It is much more of an undertaking to learn the beurocracy of Joomla (or any other CMS) than it would be to just work out how to do it yourself within your own simpler framework. Whether it's worth using Joomla or not rather depends on how much of its existing functionality you plan to use.

Actually I'll first point to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joomla

And then understand what is CMS because that is what Joomla is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system

And a quick list of all well known CMSs in the market
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_content_management_systems

Finally read some other bloggers opinions on Joomla and different CMS

Joomla is a CMS. Like many other CMSes, it has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Code:

What is Joomla intended for?

It's a content management system so you can use it to manage the content of your site.

Code:

What are the prerequisites required for using joomla?

You'll need a host that supports PHP and let's you create a MySQL database. Frihost supports all that is required by Joomla

Code:
Disadvantage of Joomla?

None really as far as the webmaster or administrator is concerned. Although I find it's relatively difficult to code templates for Joomla.

If you are considering a content management system for your site, I would recommend WordPress instead.

My 50 cents. Hope they help you.

really? i find wordpress useful for blogging but not for cms. why do you say wordpress is preferred over joomla? I think there are only 2 serious options, Joomla! and Drupal. Then for even more serious Typo3.
