Should Obama have given up his BlackBerry?

Looks as though Obama's two mainstays in his life are smoking and his BlackBerry cell phone. The White House Security Staff were not too keen for him to keep the BlackBerry, but he insisted and won his battle to keep it. What do you think? Good advertising for BlackBerry? Idea

He was not allowed to keep it. He was issued a new secure one. I don't know why he'd ever think he'd be able to keep his personal one.

Ah, that's what I figured. They have to be able to send him classified information without worrying about it being intercepted. Why did he struggle to keep his old one if they were replacing it for him though?

The news article quoted in the foxnews Web page at the link provided by you Moonspider says they were not sure whether his existing one has been upgraded, or he has been given a new one? Do you know for sure that he was given a new one?

I thought it was interesting that BlackBerry could use the President for its advertising campaign, and whether the President would be compensated for attaching him to the advertising campaign? Is that really allowed? Where would the proceeds from the advertising go to, or was this free for BlackBerry? Wonder whether the cigarette brand he is smoking will start on a similar campaign of theirs one of these days?

I thought the president of the United States wasn't allowed a computer in his oval office etc for security reasons, but a blackberry pretty much does what a computer does... isn't that weird?

Obama is not a normal now, he is the president of the USA. i think everyone know why The White House Security Staff ask Obama to give up his blackberry. Obama should try to cooperate with The White House Security Staff.

As commander and chief of the military he could certainly be supplied with a top-secret cleared computer system from the DOD. If they are concerned about bugging devices concealed in the computer despite the top-secret protocol of protections against it, they build a Faraday cage into the office, and monitor all cables leading out. (Not as complicated as it sounds, just an energized grid of wires around the whole office, which will prevent any wireless communication in or out: very common for top secret information protection.)
