Circuit City closing all U.S. stores.

The Canadian stores are going to stay open.
They are not releasing the plans for the website.

Well, they blame the economic climate, which I'm sure is a factor, but I'll also bet that they are suffering a lot from the competition of online retailers.
I know personally, if I was to buy some electronic item, I would be far more likely to buy it online than at a store.

There is lot of good in Canadian business, but when I was there for July/August, and planning my trip, found that when I was making online enquiries for renting equipment such as TV and computer (I was hoping I could get it delivered with the whole package done online), that that was not readily available. There was one online business but super expensive. This is Vancouver though. Perhaps Toronto is more with it with online businesses. Think Vancouver, and perhaps Canada as a whole lag the US with online business. There may be reasons for it, so perhaps some savvy business people from Canada can comment on this. I would not be surprised if it has something to do with taxes.

I do not know how easily available mobile phones are in the US, but in comparison with the Middle East, Canada was behind again. Not in technology as that which is available is really excellent, but people seem to be OK with landline phones, or online phoning, and cell phones are more of a luxury for personal use. I found it expensive as well, and not as readily available in other countries where you can get a SIM Card at the airport. I couldn't find any at the airport, and then when I finally figured out where to get it, found that landline was a cheaper option.

I saw that Circuit City would be closing soon, no surprise. Pretty unfortunate... but I guess we have to live with it.

It makes me wonder about Best Buy! Yes they are different in their approach and business models, but you have to wonder if Best Buy isn't too far behind. I agree with ocalhoun it makes more sense to buy online. however, i suppose there are people out there who want the whole personal experience of meeting with a sales person.

Well, at least we can get pretty good discounts on all their stuff, since it pretty much has to be liquidated now. So if you're looking for a new TV, now's the time.

Wait till the end when they desperately need to get rid of their products. The prices are actually likely higher at this time than they were before the announcement of closing.

Circuit City near me had much better computer parts than Best Buy does. But, Best Buy is always full of people. BB is pretty safe.

I can't believe Sears is still in business. I hate that store. The customer service has pissed me off the few times I have gone in there the past 10 years.

I think Best Buy is pretty happy now, not much competition left. In my area there are only 2 fully stocked tech stores: Best Buy and Circuit City.

Now that my Circuit City here is closed, Best Buy has it's monopoly in about a 50-100 mile radius, and I bet in other areas too.

I personally don't like shopping online for parts, especially if you have to return it, it's a hassle for me. I like going to a store and see what I'm actually buying. It's also nice to have someone near you that can answer your questions.

Guess I have no choice except to go to Best Buy now. Smile

Does any one know how old circuit city was. It is however a big chain and after Woolsworth of england, it is another big chain to close altogether. I don't knwo if there is a woolsworth thread aound but that was a century old chain that closed all its more than 800 stores in england and vanished into the history amid tears, 5th of january.
