Take a look at this. It's a little out of date but still relevant.

need to DOWNLOAD one DISCUSSION BOARD from http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Discussion_Boards/index.html
after you do that all you need to do is to INSTALL it on your server...
after you installed it on your server you should choose a nice skin (or build one) and get your site running!!

I personally don't like PHP BB since all the forums I had that were running this board kept getting new spammers day after day... but I know that lots of people around here LOVE IT... I used like INVISION POWER BOARD...

I would recommend PHPBB platform for a forum... Because it is more user friendly and easy to perform the actions... The latest version of the phpbb is 3.0.4 you can get it from the following link

http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/olympus.php?sid=008206dcb7e3958535241fe42806fe4f

You will get it in zip format and you can unzip it and upload it into your account and follow the simple steps of installation and there you go with your own forum..!!

Ditto about phpBB. I installed it locally and found it is quite a good choice for a free bbs.

phpBB is a good choice. It is easy to install and operate. It looks good too. It also makes no problems. Very Happy

Always try to install the latest version..Otherwise you are likely to face problems related to spammers etc...!! For example if you install a phpbb2 froum now without any anti spam mod you are likely get a huge number of spammers on your forum..!! So always try to update the phpbb forum version...!!
tdossi
Properly. Now one should not instal phpbb2 any more. But phpbb3. Topical version: 3.0.4. All other is too unsafe.
nivinjoy
But there are still some sites which uses phpbb2 version and continues to remain unharmed...!! They do many mods which can make the forum safe...!!

If you are expert in installing mods and likes phpbb2 more than phpbb3 (there are some people who likes phpbb2 version more than phpbb3),you can go for it...!! But be sure with the mods that can make you safe from the spammers and harmful bots...!!

So, instead of creating one.. you want to install one? Like others have said PHPBB can be nice, but venturing into "MyBB" is also worthwhile. Wink

mybb whats this? whats the use of this code? shall i use in my forum also..
Afaceinthematrix
I've coded several php forums in my day... Coding them takes a lot of effort and time... I would suggest following that tutorial and just using a phpbb forum or something like it... The reason why I say this is that the last time I coded a full forum like this, it took me probably 100+ hours (that's just a random estimate) and I could easily have gotten the same thing by simply downloading it for free... it's not really worth the time (although i did it during a summer break from school when I had nothing better to do... so I spent a week or so of sleepless nights making it perfect)...

of coure this code is PHP and mybb is free.

MyBB - Infomation you can read here.

Why MyBB?

Okay, so you're not sure why you should choose MyBB? Here's a short but complete list of reasons on why you should use MyBB.
Its Free!

MyBB is completely free to download, install and use! You're also free to privately modify the source code at any time you like as long as you follow the license agreement at all times.
Easy To Manage

Imagine being able to easily manage your discussion system all through simple yet extensive administration tools. MyBB contains all of the necessary tools you need to be able to effectively and efficiently manage your forums, from settings, to forums, moderators, styles, permissions - its all there!
Easy To Customize

With a few clicks, color changes and font face and size changes you can quickly create your own unique looking theme for MyBB. Themes consist of sets of colors, fonts and other attributes which explain how the page should be rendered for the user. Want to take things a step further? MyBB also contains an extensive template system allowing you to modify the board layout completely!
Powerful Tools

Keeping with the simplicity of MyBB we have managed to include advanced tools and features bundled for use at your preference. Many features such as an advanced permissions system, powerful user administration features, a complete user control panel and much more are all bundled with in the standard downloadable MyBB package.
Quick and Reliable Support

We aim to provide you with the best and most comprehensive support to allow you to manage your board. From free support plans, to paid support plans we will make sure you get what you need from MyBB.

Extensive Planning
MyBB's interface was built to be easy to use

MyBB's extensively planned nature provides an easy to use and intuitive forum interface that you and your visitors are used to. Both common and unique features are found throughout MyBB, offering a similar experience, but still with a few individual MyBB touches. Features throughout MyBB are easy to find and use without compromising their usefulness. This can be seen in several places in MyBB, from the new reply page where users start discussions to the user control panel where users control their experience, and even the admin control panel.
Custom mod tools

Mod tools combine moderation functions
Advanced Moderation Tools
Extensive moderation made easy

MyBB's moderation features are nothing short of extensive, and are just what you would expect in any forum software. However, their sophistication is offered in an easy to use interface that makes moderation easy. Much of the moderation you perform in MyBB can be done inline, while being able to perform them on multiple threads or posts. For instance, you can mass move selected threads in a forum, or just move one. MyBB also offers custom moderator tools that allow you to create combinations of moderation functions that can all be performed to a thread or post at the click of a button. This offers you, the administrator, the ability to create tools that perform combinations of the many moderation functions available in MyBB.

Hooks are everywhere
Plugin hooks are found throughout MyBB

MyBB's plugin system makes use of hooks found throughout the PHP code. These hooks allow plugins to run code where the hook is placed, which means most plugins will not require you to modify any files. Hooks are even found in the administrator control panel, meaning plugins can add new pages to the Admin CP or add items to existing pages, once again without editing a single file. MyBB's plugin hooks list is quite extensive, meaning that you hardly ever have to modify a file for addition of new features to MyBB, both small and large.
Templates

Template in the Admin CP
New template? No problem!
Plugins can add or modify templates, too

MyBB's plugin system allows for more than just the running of code through hooks. When you activate a plugin, they can add new templates, and even modify existing templates for all existing sets. Because plugins can modify your templates as well, no lengthy step-by-step instructions are necessary for most modifications for your forum - you'll just upload the plugin file, hit Activate, and you're done. Customizing your forum can't get any easier!

Why don't we get myBB right now ???/ i thinks it's also good for a free Forum
CosmicDisturbance
If you're asking why we don't have it on Frihost, it's probably because we're already on PhpBB
carlospro7
yeah, like everyone i would definitely suggest using phpBB.

Hello, I find phpBB as the best forum software I know. phpBB is free, source-open software for the server-sided supply of an Internet forum in the style of a so-called bulletin Boards which has supported on the Skriptsprache PHP and a big number of data banks, e.g., MySQL and PostgreSQL. It stands under the GPL. I would recommend phpBB everybody.
welshsteve
phpBB is very simple to use and easy to install.

You can tets it locally if you have apache and MySQL installed and running. Web Developer Server Suite (http://www.devside.net/) is very good and simpel to use for this purpose.

Hello welshsteve,
Thank you for the tip.
The side http://www.devside.net/ is really a great help.

tdossi
I would install a phpBB forum.
Is simple and intuitive.
Has worked perfectly for me.

* If possible, make the config.php in the root directory on the server via CHMOD writable (CHMOD-see instructions). However, it is without this step.
* Http://www.domain.de/phpBB2/install/install.php typing in the address bar of your browser
* Database data (host contact, if undecided) Enter in the boxes and select sql system (MySQL3 or four or ...) send ==> and

The installation script now creates all required tables and generates the content of config.php (which is previously empty!) Automatically.
not respect the script config.php can describe one given the opportunity to download the config.php to then manually upload via FTP into the phpBB root directory.
