Blu-ray discs to adopt same DRM as rival HD-DVD
Sony’s Blu-ray Disks and Toshiba’s HD-DVD are the next line of DVD formats that are soon to hit the market and both have agreed on using the same digital rights management (DRM) anti-copying technology.

They will both use Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorised disc copying. Also Sony has included their own DRM technology, ROM Mark, which is designed to safeguard against mass production.

The discs, recorders and players will use the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorised disc copying, the system already used by Toshiba’s HD-DVD ready devices.

Industry pundits are hoping that the news will bring closer the possibility of a unified format, something that both camps seem keen on creating without giving up too much away of their own technology in the process.
In addition, Blu-ray has its own DRM technology, ROM Mark, designed to guard against mass production and sale of illegally copied discs. The technology embeds a unique and undetectable identifier in pre-recorded BD-ROM media such as movies, music and games.
While invisible to consumers, this ROM Mark can only be mastered with equipment available to licensed BD-ROM manufacturers, thereby preventing unauthorised copying, something which the movies industry estimates costs it $3bn each year.
The BDA also adopted BD+, a Blu-ray-specific feature that gives content providers an additional means to respond to organised attacks on the security system by allowing dynamic updates of compromised code.
As the rival HD-DVD format adopted AACS a while back, this latest announcement is encouraging news, as it removes one barrier to the possible merger of the two systems. As ever, talks are said to be ongoing.
