Ortho Molecular

peaceupnorth
My friend had a shizophrenic episode last year and they put him on heavy drugs to control it.... Nowhis father has turned him on to "Ortho-Molecular" medicine, which basically means mega-doses of vitamins to balance the brain and with the aim of getting him off the drugs eventually.

Does anybody have any experience with this approach? Any anecdotes about it? Is it effective?

Sounds like a caring father, as drugs are very difficult to take for people like this. Thanks for introducing the subject heading. I found the Website below, perhaps there is something of interest in it for you. Am curious. Is your friend being treated with the mega doses of medicine by a naturopath or a medical doctor? What vitamins are they, and how much does he need to take?

I know doctors who use ortho molecular nutrition with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses such as depression. There is still little known about the results of these natural medications. But the doctor who I knew said he had luck, particularly with patients who have not been on the anti-psychotics for a long period of time. So if he has not been on hardcore drugs for a very long time, as I understand, there is a greater chance of success.

Thanks Dean,

To answer, my friend is taking mega-doses of vitamin C, and the Bs for sure. I think he's got a few other vitamins as well like D, A etc, but I don't believe those are mega-doses cuz that's potentially toxic. He's on enzymes and probiotics too... all in all a load of pills. His doctor is a specialist in another city... not sure if a naturopath or MD, they run a clinic specializing in these types of cases.

But he seems to be recovering nicely, he's gained about 40 lbs of healthy weight (was a skeleton before), and his mood is excellent, peaceful and positive. My initial skepticism has thus diminished. I think food/nutrition therapy is a direction our med system needs to pay more attention to.

For example. I volunteer at a local intensive-care facility. There are lots of people with demetia and other serious degenerations... and what are they feeding them? Kool-aid, bacon, cupcakes, white flour and sugar... man if I ate that way I think I'd feel pretty terrible too!

Fatty animal foods can actually accelerate degenerative diseases, take this article for example. (I have read elsewhere that these amyloid-producing substances are found throughout animal products, not just foie gras (although the latter is a particularly rich source).)
