A trip to Whitby over the hills.

....on todays spin out to Whitby.
5 of us left Wakey, one turned back after 5 miles (apparently hasn't regained radio contact with his frozen gonads yet!) & Joicey joined us on the A64 to make it 5 again.
Headed north past York & all roads seemed slippy, so it was a steady pace. 5 miles or so before Helmsley I stopped to take a pic & setting off again snapped a gear cable....Joicey replaced it from his kit (MUST get some spares of my own!) & we set off again, only for it to slip & fail again. I sent them on to meet up with others at Helmsley, but took longer than anticipated to fix it, so by the time I met the rest 45 mins or so had been lost.
The bulk of the pack decided on the direct route to Whitby, but I'd set my heart on the scenic route, so I set off over moors alone & found some stunning scootering terrain....up hill, down dale....exhilarating stuff indeed, and definitely a route to re-visit.
Sad thing was I missed the lads in Whitby, so rode home myself the 85 miles or so.
A fantastic day out, spoiled by the timing of the cable going slightly though.
Thanks to all for making the effort.

The only snap of all the Wakey contingent...Molibdimum's telling me he takes 2 sugars, I think.

We were in such remote areas that BT haven't noticed they've left a "proper" phone box in place instead of one of those poxy silver things....and HEY! the vandals haven't found it either!
A real taste of how things used to be.

Hutton-Le-Hole, N. Yorkshire - beautiful.

So many sheep...so little time.

Just about to ride off the edge of the earth !

Half way down...I'd to turn the scooter round as it kept falling forwards off the stand downhill ! Above Rosedale Abbey

High up on the moor, t'other side of Rosedale....only Landrovers, the odd car, and errmmm.....me for miles !

Down the other side after a long, slippery descent....I was relieved to see the ford was (almost) dry, as I'd have had to have retraced many miles had it not been. Footbridge too narrow for anything but feet.

Same place

Finally in Whitby....Dracula was hiding, as were my cohorts, in a cafe unbeknown to me!

So I rode north along the cliff-top road & enjoyed the sunshine over my picnic. Never got right down to my undies though.

Maybe they hid to avoid the leftover mince pies?

And finally, over the tops towards Pickering is the majestic Hole Of Horcum....can't beat Yorkshire.

Well, that's one difference between scootering and jeeping... No 'no man left behind' rule... Confused
Well, I guess leaving somebody stranded on a main road isn't as bad as leaving somebody stranded miles from civilization though.

Besides that, I'm still amazed at the similarities though.

I really quite wanted to be on my own though....too many scooters & you don't feel comfortable stopping where you want to take photos (I love that, but lots more can't be bothered stopping/starting all the time).
We do have that "rule" not to leave anyone & if we pass a stranger stuck out alone we always stop.
I was happy fixing my own cable & letting them go on.

your lucky to have that kind of scenery around you....I'd give anything to take a ride like that.

well, it's not really near where I live (though we have some nice scenery nearby)...that seaside resort (Whitby) is about 85 miles from home, but is a super ride over.

^.^ That may be a long way by English standards, but 85 miles seems very close by to me!

85 miles away isnt that far..on that what a couple hours or so??? still well worth it i would say, you never know what you'll see on the way over it always changes.

the most I've done in one day on a Lambretta is 375 miles...that was one of 3 days, where I rode a total of 870 miles and visited 28 football stadiums in England.....now I DID have a sore bum after that !! Shocked

Looks you enjoyed a lot!

I'm not into scooters, but thanks for some excellent pictures and amusing captions ! Why travel abroad when we have scenery like that here in the UK ?
