'suffer' and 'suffer from'

I can't tell the differences between the 2 expressions. Are they almost the same?

"Suffer from" means that you are really bothered by it, while "suffer" means you have it. Like in: "I suffer from headaches because I suffer the flu."

English is btw not my first language, so correct me if I'm wrong.

They could be used interchangeably, except that you can't use suffer from without specifying something that causes the suffering. You can say someone suffers without specifying what it is they are suffering from.
