Obama Confirms He Will Close Controversial Guantanamo Prison

To his credit, Obama has reiterated this intention to close Guantanamo. In fact he let the word out on the subject again a couple days before his meeting with Pres. Bush, basically letting him know who's the boss and that Bush's private little gulag was going down.

How to do this exactly is, however, a legal and political nightmare.

Does he actually have a plan for how to do it and where to put the prisoners, or is he just going to figure that out later, since it isn't important?

He is, by all accounts, a methodical planner.

I watched that interview and I don't recall Obama providing any details whatsoever with regard to closing the prison in GTMO.

Yes, you're right. I provided that link only to provide some background as to the nature of Obama's character and ability to plan in general, about whether or not it is likely that "he (is) just going to figure that out later, since it isn't important".

That question might be a fair one, since Bush pretty much had the attitude of "just going to figure that out later" in regards to major issues like the nation-building in Iraq and readiness of FEMA. It looks pretty obvious to me that Obama is more of an in-depth planner -- which is what the country needs now.

It's about time someone closes Gitmo. If the US wants to hold terrorists, they should do that in their own country.

Yes, its the right move.

US should keep those prisoners in their own land and start trial according to US laws. Else, what is the use of the term "modern society"??

The ideal choice would have been to hold them in the area where they were captured, but those prisons would have been too attractive as targets to other terrorists.

The people there are in very bad legal shape though. According to LOAC, as 'unlawful combatants' they don't get POW status, and they certainly aren't protected as US citizens...

The best choice would be to turn them in for trial and sentencing from their home countries, which would mean that most of them would stand trial in the Afghan or Iraqi court systems.

The Terrorist in Chief will probably have them come to dinner at the white house to start making ammends for their mistreatments.
