Firefox 3.x crashes so often.. i am moving back to IE

toxictux
has anyone else noticed firefox 3 crashing too many times. i am so annoyed at this point, i have started using IE / Opera. every single update i think the crash problem would be fixed but doesnt seem to.

my recent upgrade to firefox 3.1 beta also seems to crash all the time. and no its not just me. my work computer has the same problem and my co-workers also complain about that. i think firefox team needs to spend some more time on QA than working on implementing useless features like Anonymous Browsing AKA Porn mode. i think the anonymous browsing mode is way too exaggerated feature. you can't really be anonymous once you are online. you can be traced all the way back to your computer date and time.

i dont think any hard core cracker (not hacker) uses firefox to break into someon's computer.

just my 2 cents.
Peterssidan
Firefox 3 has never crashed for me. Are you sure you haven't installed any buggy plugins?
KHO
Agreed, I haven't had a single crash of FFX 3.x on my 3 windows machines and 2 ubuntu (8.04/8.10) machines since I loaded the RC version of it. It also has not exhibited the "memory leak" that previous versions have.
Horizon
Mine has crashed from time to time, but that's only for a single page (a large, Adobe game..). But what does happen at any point in time, and only with FireFox, is it opens a tab that I closed a while before, switches to the tab, and closes it right after. It goes fast, but it's noticable. Very weird behavior..

Actually speaking, could be a malware that your computer contracted, and spread it to your work pc, and then to your colleagues, or could have been other way round. Also could have been the fact that the downloaded file was a bit corrupt, and you spread it across for everybody to use, or that everybody in the place is using some buggy addons, could also be that your colleagues are just exaggerating their crashes to make you feel better... Twisted Evil

So scan and keep your pc clean, use a firewall (not windows firewall) and antivirus (not AVG/Avast/Norton/McAfee).
Download the latest stable build, and cross verify the md5 hashes.
Use safe mode to see if it still crashes
Stick to firefox 3, submit crash resports, so that it will help, you and others in the long run.
Ignore other colleagues commenting bad stuff about firefox, they dont know what they are saying Razz

YOU'RE INFECTED

I've installed FF3 on so many PCs I maintain and none of them have any issues whatsoever

Well if you don't like firefox, use something other than IE, please. Opera is a good choice. IE is not.

No problems here. Although Java can sometimes crash a page.

Back when Firefox 2.x was "new", I had it crash so many times that I too switched back to IE.

(Ad campaign for Microsoft maybe? "That's why so many.... are switching back" - cut to people walking towards a bright light, then the IE logo is super-imposed on the screen. MS marketing: call me!)

And now I sometimes have to use Firefox 3 when I boot up my Linux system, and it even looks bad. I'm not saying IE is the best browser, but I am saying that the market leaders seem to have a trend of crappiness.

Maybe I should switch to Chrome.....

Opera is really good too you know. Better than IE imo.
kirii
believe me,IE crush more than firefox

I have firefox3 as well ( finally installed it) and I have never experienced a crash unless it was from my own stupidity to add to many tabs (30+) but under 3-6 tabs it runs fine! Try it without all the add ons and plug ins then add them one by one to figure out why it crashes. That however is the road I'd choose to solve the problem. IE is was more likely to crash then firefox because Mircosoft created it ( THIS IS MY OPINION ONLY)
weableandbob
firefox 3 has...actually never crashed for me. There's a time when my computer froze up from another program and closed everything, but it wasn't firefox's fault
surdy
Hey i faced trouble with beta versions of firefox 3 on windows.

But after i started using the stable release I haven't faced any crashes ...neither on Linux ..nor on Windows. Life is so much good with firefox that i cannot dream of going back to IE (anyways I mostly use Linux ..so that is not an option now)

Yeah that's why most of the people use the stable versions instead of the betas Wink
I have FF 3.0.4 on my mac and it crashes from time to time, but it doesn't bother me that much since I still prefer it over Safari, Camino and Opera. Not much, but enough. Smile
cyberbuddy
FireFox has crashed in my system few days back but what i did is i made an investigation and concluded that it was some waste and dirty cookies which was creating the crash and yes seriously i too taught of transit to IE but this doesn't happens to everyone so the problem lies on me .this i came to know and started using Anti spyware with cookie management which keeps track of some dangerous and harmful cookies or popup which always is a problem maker .I really dont know why thees sites send pop up page ,nearly 85% of the public ignore the popups and really some of them is deadly dangerous

Basically keeps flushing the temporary files after 10 days so that such problem doesn't turn up .

thank u Very Happy

Spybot Search & Destroy does a good job in assigning bad sites and bad cookies maybe that's why i don't crash!
Magicman
I've never had a problem with crashing without a good reason on both my PC and Mac. You might have a corrupted copy or a virus like others have said.

Doesn't happen in here, it appears to be a conflict in there. But stay away from Internet Explorer, if Firefox is having problems in the moment, use Google Chrome. Very good too.

Memory leak programs to be exact, l haven't but l get a crash here or there but im also using portable alot... so... nope it's fine

Opera is the best for ever.
Studio Madcrow
I (running 32-bit Linux) haven't had any problems beyond the occasion Flash-induced crash every couple of weeks or so, but my father (running 64-bit Linux) HAS has big issues. Maybe the 64-bit versions of Firefox just plain stink or something.
the-guide
Really? I've never found any trouble about Firefox3 like that here. Question
Hogwarts
I'm having absoloutely no crashes here, reinstall it Sad

I'm using 64 bits but no problems for me so I don't think that's the problem.

I'm not sure what your primses or intentions are, but I'd sure like to know.

Smell of Indian food ? Let's ignore the racism in your words for a moment, but -
Why do you think one's olfactory preferences have anything to do with their choice of web browser ?
Why do you think Opera is inferior to Firefox, and by extension, the smell of India food, inferior to the smell of what you eat ?

Why do you think others need to get used to your preferences ?

Please explain.

The topic was about Firefox crashes. When Firefox released its 3.0.6 version, it is clearly stated in the release notes that they have fixed several stability issues. This means that those who are experiencing frequent crashes with Firefox can try the latest version and see the difference. Even for me it crashes a lot but I never use any other browser as I am in love with this... The reason of crash, as I identified, is nothing related to Firefox but one of my memory module got damaged.

About India food, its a thoughtless comment, I'm sorry to say that. It may take more time for each and everyone of us to travel across the planet and get used to all smells and tastes. Till then, such comments... may be a time pass and requires no attention. Not a big issue...
HamsterMan
How about a compromise.

"Firefox 3.x crashes so often.. i am moving back to Firefox 2.x"

But yeah, I've been having severe stability issues with Firefox 3 myself. Like if I leave Firefox 3 on for an hour or so to let it cache a movie or download some MP3s or something, when I later try to use it will will slow down to a halt and then freeze completely. Or if I have several tabs open that are loading movie clips it's pretty much the same thing.

And my computer isn't just any old scrap of junk, 2GB ram, running XP and it has a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ CPU.
David_Pardy
I've never had Firefox 3 crash on me, and I've had fewer crashes from several years of using Firefox since the 0.7 "Firebird" beta stage (0.6 was unstable, and did crash a bit) than I've had in IE.

IE is awful. I've used it a couple of times recently and I have no idea how people can stand it.

I can't personally vouch for Opera though.

But if you're having problems with Firefox crashing, it's most likely due to a problem with Windows or another program.

A dodgy installation of Flash, DivX, Quicktime, Acrobat Reader, etc.

Don't forget Firefox uses external programs to run embedded components in websites, as well as internally opening said programs to load documents - such as PDFs.

The first steps to take are running virus and spyware scans. Go to Start -> Run, and type in "eventvwr". Check the Applications and System sections for errors - check which DLLs or EXE files are causing the errors. Check the memory addresses referred to in the errors as seeing the same error (and seeing Page Faults) as they may indicate a physical memory problem.

Firefox 3 is a fantastic browser, I literally have it running for hours at a time with anything up to 20 tabs open at once - never crashes, never slows down and the only problems I've ever had with it are to do with add-ons or website issues.

Maybe I am a lucky one? And my friends too?
Everybody uses firefox 3 around me and nobody complains about crashes only slow startup. Smile
I'm usin it with a realy customized look and with 42 extensions, 20-25 tabs on the avarage and if it's crashes every 2nd week once I may said much.

Currently, I use Opera. The in-built mail client is far superior to Thunderbird, I'm in love with dragonfly/mouse gestures, and I simply support it because it's not Firefox. Opera is the browser that has all the innovative ideas, which is one of the only reasons Firefox improves. The URL bar, quick launch, mouse gestures, mail system, speed and wand are all superior to Firefox's, in my opinion.

Currently using the Opera 10 alpha, and it only rarely crashes, although I'd probably source that to the amount of programs currently running on this crudbox. Fantastic for an alpha, though Surprised

Actually tried this. It was a mistake. Chrome is too new, so it crashes almost 45% of the time. I don't hate the browser, just the development bugs.

FF3 is the best bet for now. Never tried Opera, but I do have it installed for web dev purposes. Looks pretty, I have to admit.
loydcampbell
I use IE mostly because as a web developer I have worked on sites that were IE only. There are times when IE doesn't get the job done, though, and I load up FF 3. Have not had crashes with FF but have had a number with IE. Haven't tried Opera yet, but will be soon.

Current laptop has Vista Home Premium 64bit.
