How do you stop a taxi

snowynight
When you are at the roadside and want to call a taxi, what kind of gestures do you use to stop it? Here we use the hand movement of calling a person to come near. Some people hold up the index finger.
Helios
This is a weird question alright. Just use some generic hand waving.
I bet there are people though who use some "unusual" techniques. Unfortunately couldn't find relate funny pictures on the net... Laughing

I've never lived in a city with taxis so I've never actually had to flag one down before but if I had too I would probably do what it seems like most people would do, and use some generic waving gesture on the side of the street.
Utopia GFR
I just wave my hand and if the taxi is not loaded with customers then it would stop for me Smile

No specific other gestures for I believe the taxi driver wouldn't really take those quite seriously Smile

Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure there are other ways of calling a taxi in other countries that may radically differ from our perception (I don't know the countries though) Smile

yeah taxi cabs don't care what you use to flag them. If they can take passengers and see you they will stop on the side or signal you to move if you happen to signal right near the pedestrian street crossing (why do people flag a cab there?). It's not rocket science. They want your business.
coolclay
Yea I can't say, I have never flagged down a cab before either. But I'd imagine if I had to I would just put my hand out, and wave it or something.
HardyPC
wave at them, that generally works i know someone that stood out n front of one to flag it down and almost got killed so be careful.

Well in Jamaica to stop a taxi all you do it hold out your hand and they will stop, or they well just blow there horn and ask u if u going in town
Vladalf
Never flagged a taxi before. I just call the company and ask for a taxi.
Vladalf

just wave my right hand.
Nameless
Throw yourself in front of it.

What? It works.

... Usually.

I just shout my destination...like...."MAIN ROAD"! and if the driver is going that way he stops...lol
snowynight
Yes some times i go to the street side and a taxi will stop to ask whether i am going.
How ever here in rush hours we just cannot find a taxi or rather, they will ask where i want to go; if the place is too near they will just refuse and drive away.

Hm buying a car is a good choice but since i live not too far away from my work and there's no parking available.
winmark
Usually taxi drivers here, are themselves looking around for customers (except on highways) ... so all you need to do is to give a hand.
airh3ad
Call a taxi and swing your arms then say stop or taxi taxi.
ankitdatashn
well if you really want to stop the taxi(however by making the cab driver angry) is by not showing the index finger but the middle one instead and he will come charging at full speed towards you, haha Very Happy

Anyways keeping fun aside the normal sign used to stop a taxi is to close your palm and point the thumb in the direction you wanna go. curl all fingers except thumb. It is the standard way to stop any vehicle. In India you can stop like this I dunno about other countries though.

However if you need a taxi urgently you can stand in the middle of the road blocking the path and shout taxi taxi and waving the hand simultaneously over your head and the taxi will definitely stop unless the taxi driver wanna go over you. Smile

The atmosphere in the United Arab Emirates is a little different for me. You have to be completely chanelled in and your body pose focussed on the taxi. Hand waving is necessary, and moving very briskly and purposefully. There is a shortage of taxis, and he who hesitates is definitely lost if no action is taken to grab the attention of the cab driver.
pashmina
well i like to whistle and wave my hands. usually it works
ninjakannon
I've only ever caught one taxi in my life and that was purely luck in the circumstances. Then, though, I didn't have to flag it down as it had already stopped for someone else, who I bundled in with.

I dislike it when posters reply to a topic merely to say that they haven't ever experienced this, or don't know the answer [etcetera, etcetera]. Hence, I have a question! How do you actually go about flagging a taxi before you see one? Do you just stand on the street edge waiting until one passes by? I expect one day I'll need to do this and I would really like to know how.

My writing style has changed somehow in this post. What's up with me?!

In Kerala State, India its as follows.

1. Go to the taxi stand or meet the driver
2. Ask him politely that you wanted to travel to a place and can you drop me there?
3. Ask about the fare and confirm
4. If he is willing to travel, get in
5. If not, do nothing. Sometimes toooo much socialism brings problems like this Smile

I use my cell phone. A simple call and the taxi is there in less than five minutes.

To stop a taxi i would just whistle and wave my hands. I am good at whistling loudly with my fingers so that comes in handy at such a time.

Do you whistle like a bird?
Hammy
Damn all you people living in big posh areas.

Where i live it's illegal for taxi's to pick people up off the street. They have to be at a taxi rank, or call the taxi to book it.

tho i've never flagged down a taxi, i have been taken home in a police car a few times Rolling Eyes

Fun Smile

I raise my right hand and wave it up and down, like a "dove" movement.

I don't know how to whistle, but it seems to be useful at night, when you and your hand are less likely to be seen.

In my country taxi is very easy to get, there are staying a lot of them in almost every corner and street so its very easy to get one... but I use the public transportation instead of a taxi dont have the money cant afford them...
reb00table
Where I live the hitchhiker's sign (thumb up) or rising your hand sign are known, but never used.
To stop a car or a minibus wave your hand something like this: http://www.autoshogo.ro/indicatoare/page19/Reduceti%20viteza.jpg . The policeman is waving his arm, but for a taxi you wave your hand only.

But the right way to get a taxi is to phone for one.
ftv_flung
It doesn't really matter as long as your arm is signalling up in some way. You could point (which is what I normally do) or just have a flat palm... this is similar to asking "when you were a kid, how did you put your hand up to answer a question?" Very Happy
PatTheGreat42
You can stop a taxi with GIANT POTHOLES. Also, T-Rexs, firearms, an entire army, a traffic jam, a patriot missile system, slashing their tires, or showing some leg (I saw it in a movie once).

You could also call the Taxi agency.
jaden7727
hahahaha very funny this is lol! Laughing
TurtleShell
When I lived in NY my prefered method was to stick out my arm as far and high as I could get it to go, at an angle, and look directly into all oncoming taxis to see if they had passengers. Same for gypsy cabs.
sana618
no use waiting for a taxi to stop for you either by waving your hand or even whistling (you are not supposed to whistl for a taxi here) just make a phone call and the taxi arrives in a few minutes.
jiangshan
I wave my right hand and call taxi taxi stoping!
tony
I use my right thumb and stand facing the taxi. Is it normal? I don't see similar replies here...
Arty
Just wave your hands at it like any normal person =p
Melacos
Here in DK we're generally too selfaware to even be bothered with waving at random strangers - including taxi-drivers.. Usually you'd rather go find some central place where they'd be parked, and hire them in a much more down to earth manner...
biljap
I do not stop taxi; either I call them to come and pick me or I find a car that is free and waiting…
Kaseas
Yeah, any indication that you want a ride.

When I stand on the curb and put my hand up some taxis even pull uwy's to come pick me up.
Gonzalo
Id make him puke showing the driver my leg hair from the distance.

Can pop up an accident thou.
spunky
raise my hand...and throw rocks if it didn't stop Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised
