Best IP Address Geographical Locator?

ProfessorY91
Hey,

I used google to list a few hundred locators where you type in an IP address, and it gives you the geographical location of whatever machine the IP address is tied to. I've been disappointed with the results I've gotten so far, as one engine gave me conflicting states, for god's sake, and I've been unable to trace these addresses to a city.

What do you use, and is it reliable? (More importantly... it must be free). As specific as possible in terms of location.

Thanks,

Y

I would post the addresses, as they aren't mine I don't give a royal damn about who does what with them, but one belongs to someone I know - who asked me to check if his gmail was being used by people other than him.

most aren't accurate as dynamic IPs are hard to track.

First of all, geographical locator doesn't and cannot pin point location of your visitor by his/her IP address. The best it can do is find the ISP provider of this visitor if not through a proxy. (This may be a different story if the user is on a tradition dial up.)

2nd, geographical locator's main purpose is to translate IP to Country name.

3rd, I use http://www.wipmania.com/'s database library, it's free and provide me monthly updates on its library.

While that is ... useful... I'm looking for something quite different. Assume all IP addresses are within the United States, and there are no proxies involved. Also disregard the term "geographical locator" - I need a State, and a City, and I know that this IS possible. I get conflicting reports, so I was wondering if anyone uses a service that is relatively reliable.

Thanks.

I like http://visualroute.visualware.com/. I have been using it for years. If you download the application you will get more features and better graphics. There is also Neotrace. I've never used it but it's supposed to be pretty good. You can get it here. http://www.networkingfiles.com/neotrace/

Both of those programs have been around for over 9 or 10 years I believe.

Reliable ... The information is just not there reliably from the free sources. I can't say about the paid ones. I have gotten some positive results. The problem is that there is a very significant amount of time that they are flat out wrong.

They are all the about same as far as reliability goes. This is because they get the information from the same source.

I think "geotool" is a good locator.
you don't need to install anything.

i have been happily using http://hostip.info site.

http://www.checkifup.com

more info section uses the IP to location mapping.

it is a free service. they do make database available as download and you can use online service to make API calls. as with any other free service, it is not 100% acurate but it does the job.

if you want real tracking and accurate information, check out paid services by maxmind. they have real detailed level mapping to IP to location.

The ones I've used before which are pretty good are:

http://cqcounter.com/whois/

and

http://geotool.servehttp.com/ (which has already been mentioned)

both are good at what they do. It gives a rough idea of where your visitors are coming from etc...

Those are tracked in the same way as static IPs are, as the people who provide them own them and therefore the location of the ISP or datacenter can be traced from them (in the case of either static or dynamic IPs)

So here's the list the discussion has come up with so far.

http://www.wipmania.com/

http://www.networkingfiles.com/neotrace/

http://visualroute.visualware.com/

http://geotool.servehttp.com

http://isitrunning.appspot.com

http://hostip.info

http://cqcounter.com/whois/

http://www.domnaintools.net was what I used to use.

Thanks everybody. The three websites that I selected from the list worked wonderfully. Chances are, one of these sites will work for anyone. While dynamic IPs are hard to track - I already stated that I wasn't into pinpointing an exact location. I basically needed to know the state in which the IP originated from. Not the street address.

Special thanks to FunDa for listing the relevant websites mentioned in the thread.

Case in point, this topic is now closed and the issue is resolved.
