Are you a Windows XP user or a Linux-geek?

I'm a Windows fan. I've never tried out Macintosh and Linux isn't really my cup of tea.
Windows XP it Rocks :p
hehehe.. i voted for the one i use most during the day.. Windows (although i am stuck with a 2003 Server, not with XP
)
I run a windows 2003 Domain at one of my jobs.
I am a Windows XP User at my 2nd job, but since i use custom applications there, i rarely use the OS.'s capabilities.
At home i have a 2003 Server Domain also, so i can practice some things to do at work.
I use a Laptop from Macintosh, that is very very pleasant. I like Mac a lot.
I am Working on a Mail Server Linux Based (Open Exchange on Suse Linux 9.2)
In my oppinion, Linux is the most stable O.S., Mac is great for designing and is now having lot's of compatible programs to compete with MS (including MS Office form Mac
)
But if you want to have a future at some place, you just have to know your way around MS, cos everyone uses it... it is not the greatest OS, but it's very userfriendly and that wins many points with people.
Be Well

I've always used Windows, 95, 98 SE, and now XP Home Edition. I can say Windows is good, but somewhat unstable

Everyone says that. But my own experience is quite different. Take the laptop I bought 7-8 months ago. I use it way too much, but Windows itself never crashed. Of course, some programs did crash, but that could always be solved by using controll+alt+delete. In fact, I'm quite happy with Windows.
I once installed Ubuntu Linux. It wasn't bad, only a bit too brown.
Next time I use Linux will be solely from the cd. I won't install anything on the hdd's.
Linux is good for reliabilty, windows is good for personal use
Bondings, i'm not saying windows isn't good.. but it isn't that stable.. once you start installing applications from other companies, you (I should say windows) immediatly start hammering dll's. The only solution Microsoft got was to test every aplication out and re-hammer the dll's so stability would be maintained.. and so were created Digitally Signed Drivers, for Wich Microsoft charges a load of money.... and most smaller (national) companies won't pay for those sums of money..
If you want an example, take the ADSL USB modem drivers from an ISP of any country (ex.: Belgium should be no exception). They have specifically built drivers for their modems with their configurations inserted.. do they Sign their drivers with microsoft? nope... and when you do that, you get an opening for a driver that will malfunction.. and now that Blue screens are over (Microsoft managed to disable that option by default.. now it just auto-restarts), you may get a machine that auto-restarts everytime you get an excessive ammount of connections on your USB Modem. This is an example that has been studied here in Portugal with the biggest ADSL ISP here... and it happens a lot.
In Linux you may have more problems getting your hardware to work, but once it starts running, it probably wont stop working until you get a hardware malfunction. The problem you related with your Linux Installation is due to Microsoft's boot.ini malfunctioning. you should always install Linux prior to any Windows. Linux's dual boot doesn't fail you, i assure you.

I'm using WinXP Pro Sp1, it's way cool. I never tried other OS though..
Of corse Window

I use windows XP most usually. But sometimes I do use Fedora linux, just for fun.
No vote to linux !!!
anyways, I use windows 2003 server.
I used to like windows xp but 2003 server is the same, less the irritations of xp.

Windows, but i want to switch to linux, because windows is too expensive.
Windows XP home SP2, all up to date!, I also like using linux.
I only know how to use Windows. No idea how to use Mac or Linux or any other
using a dual boot of linux and windows
Only Linux.
I´ve chosen the Fedora Core 3 distro because it´s very easy to use and it´s RPM supported.
Maybe later i´ll switch to slack or gentoo.. maybe Debian(Debra and Ian lol, Ian is the creator of this distro)...
why I use it? lol I don´t think you care =P

Maybe you should edit your poll and add BSD and SUN/Solaris ?????
I use windows and linux
I use Debian GNU/Linux at home, at work, and on my laptop, because I want a fast, free, very secure, extremely stable, light, opensource, hightly customizable, and user friendly OS with a huge choice of softwares.
I'm using Windows XP Home at my Notebook and Linux Mandrake at my PC
Curently I'm mainly using Windows XP SP2, so far so good - though I had some bad feelings when i had to move on to SP2. I was using all kinds of OS's, and not that I say MS is the best, the worst or allude on any of those, but all I can remark is that Microsoft products are like drugs - you use it, you hate it, you know it' bad for you but you just can't stop using it.
i use Windows XP. It's user friendly.
I use windows, but it always crashes like no tomorrow for me.
thats hard to answer as i am curently using XP (was xp written by some kid???) but due to xp being the pain in the ass it is i was seiously gonna ditch XP for linux BUT....... i was put of linuk by its windows 98 lok e.g. grey squared task bars and so on and so forth but im still limping along with XP Longhorn is on my wish list at the moment can't wait for final realease in 10/2006
How to sum XP up in 2 words f****** s*** pardon the french but the problem is there are probly hundreds maybe thousands of updates you have to download which is the biggest headache its got more holes in it that a fishermans net!!!

windows xp although i prefer mac a lot more.
well, i use winXP for games and Linux for works
I LOVE Mac os X Windows is suck
It's GNU/Linux, not Linux. It's free software, not open source. And there's reasoning for that. (see http://www.gnu.org for more)
I use Windows, not so fond of Mac and I have not try other operating systems yet.
I love how you describe MS, probably true for me too. Gosh, I'm using a drug single day and I don't even know about it

Actually, in my opinion:
Mac has probably the most stable operationg system, but I am not crazy about it. I think that Apple has the best hardware and Microsoft has the best OS.

ever since from primary school i have always studied on windows operating system and i am now fimilar with them.
therefore windows will always be the one for me.

Yeah, learning a new OS requires considerable effort, and many of your previously learned software package no longer exist in your new OS

currently i'm runing windows2000. why?
because games for linux are few, and far between.
personally i think linux is the better OS, but it lacks quality software for so many professional purposes.
asked for my favorite OS i'd say Irix. why?
hm, what makes it any better then AIX, HP-UX, TRU64 or solaris? dunno, maybe the design of the SGI-boxes, i realy can't tell

Guys
I like linux but I cant use it right now becasue of some problems. So right now my operating system is based on windows. And I am using xp professional, win 98 and win me. But I hardly open win 98 and win me.
I love to use xp as it is great. THough little buggy but working fine for me.

This I find kinda odd.
It seems to me that Mac is more popular that Linux, but I guess that the kind of people you find on a web developers forum favor the edgy, geeky shareware stuff.

Linux is great for profesional uses, but average user need Windows for common aplications that's use their friends, colleges, etc.
Commertial side of Windows is still to high for linux advatages.

i use Microsoft Window XP
and sometime use Microsoft Window Server 2000 and 2003

I use Windows XP Pro with my own tweaks to prevent it from sending annonomus info back to Microsoft, sure they want to see how you use their stuff so they can improve on it, but it's still considered spying on your activities, even if it's genuine Microsoft material.
Until I go to university, I only knew Linux existed... then I was "forced" to use linux, due to the style the teachers used... Thank god they made me use linux. Now I only use linux most of my time. Even though I'm writing this post on windows, I pass most of my time walking around the most astonishing OS in the world!
In terms of stability there's no comparison between windows and linux, and linux requires less memory/cpu freq to work perfectly well... except if you want to play games, use 3D like maya... but overall I praise to god and thank him for bringing to life linus torvalds! hehe (or should it be his mom?)
I am using Win XP Pro. with SP2..

good for u
the last time I used WinXP, is the last time I saw "ERROR BLUE SCREEN"
I'm a GNU/Linux Ubuntu user .
I like Linux because the amount of virrussus that infect linux is ver small
But still most programs are made for Windows and I tried fedora core
But I got no sound out of it.
But what is the best linux version
(Mandrake, Fedora Core, Red Hat etc.)

linux is better but windows owns too many of the required software(s) such as D3D etc... I certainly like linux better... Microsoft has been goin crazy with it's Digital rights management... I have a perfectly legal copy of Office XP, and I had to argue my case to microsoft it was legal after reinstalling windows... (not a reformat) you would think microsoft would think ahead... and for it's software to be friendly with it's own software... ugh...
anyway thats my two cents...
anyway thats my two cents...
ubuntu is the BEST for a new linux user... not over simplified... yet easy to get a basic setup...
I think Windows XP is good enough. I have tried Linux in school before, quite difficult to use, although the good thing is that it is open source. It is not user friendly, so I don't bother to try it out on my own computer.
Linux ditribs for beginers (like Mepis or Ubuntu) are much more user-friendly than Windows...[/code]
Windows ofcourse. The original Operating System.
Windows XP ofcourse
was initially using win 98 but my hdd crashed last month and i shifted to xp now.
Unfortunantly I'm using Window XP pro. But I'm also using a live CD of Slax which is like linux.
OS X v10.4.2 "Tiger" Hoorah.[/i]
Wherever did you get the idea the windoze is the original OS??? That couldn't be farther from the truth!

unless xp comes with your computer, I find little reason for owning it other than it boots quickly. I am always changing hardware in one way or another and you are only "allowed!" a few changes before you are "deactivated". they are eternally coming up with new OS's but win 2k is still the best in my estimation. it is widely supported & doesn't crash unless you like warez. set yourself up with the right browser, firewalls, & security software & you are as bullet proof as you can get in the current environment (unless you like mac).

But Solaris is more for a workstation or a server , not for a desktop pc.
I think you should keep that in mind.
I use Windows 2003, because i see it as the best windows ever build.
Although I'm more a Linux fan and experiment with any Linux I get under my fingertips.
So I had to vote both Windows and Linux.
My family has five computers. They all use Linux, or will soon. (Mandrake 9.2 currently)
My new laptop came with MSW XP, which is the only reason I have it. I instantly installed
Linux on it, and decided to leave MS on it as a second OS, because I'd never done that before,
and it can be usefull for a few things (namely a few games that don't work on Linux).
On Linux, you never have to wory about viruses, worms etc. and it's free. I mean $150.00 for an upgrade? Come on. I sure can't afford that kind of money, times five computers. For that much money you can literaly buy an computer, plus the (free) OS that comes with it, if your willing to settle for the cheapest of the cheap:
40GB HD
128 RAM
CD-ROM
Floppy drive (though why you'd want one of those is beyond me)
$149.00 on sale at "Frys Electronics"
Oh, you'll need to buy a display too. (you can get one for under $85, not a flat pannel mind you.)

Isn't Knoppix a cd based linux ?
I actually use it if i have a problem with my windows xp. In that case, i just take the cd, boot from it, and save my files to another computer through a home network. Reinstall windows and voilà !! I saved my files and i have a clean xp ! (just takes a whole day to do it !!)
hey guys, yea i have been using Windows Xp hoem edition recently switched to Media Center and saw that it was much faster. Um haven't had any crashes with eithe rof them they're both pretty stable and i think that they are more user friendly. I mean i have heard Linux doesn't have any games or has stuff thats still being fine tuned!
I mean Windows ha been with me for like ever since i can remember, so like yea i have to say i think im gonna stick with it.
P.S. that's all i like abot Microsoft, their OS but i hate their Gaming console XBOX- its a pure shit box!!!! LOL, sorry for the language.

i think, linux really is quite a stable operating system, but at least i didn't notice that it is any more stable than any other unixes... on the other side, as long as i used windows, i was really a lot annoyed about how fast i managed to mess everything up, ending up with a completely slowed down operation system that i hardly could use any more (ok; i have to say that these experiences already date back quite some time; but it was enough to spoil my whole attitude towards software produced by microsoft...).
| Bockman wrote: |

i mean, i don't really care about what other people are using (or is there some advantage in using the same operating system as 90% of average users; apart of having better chances about infecting your computer with spyware, worms & viruses, of course)
some years ago it was really frustrating to install an alternative operating system on a pc because you had to wait for programmers to write drivers for your hardware. but this unfortunate situation improved a lot. and there are also several manufacters who port their driver-code to alternative platforms. indeed of this fortunate evolution of things, it's still a strong point (and in my humble opinion the unique reason!) for using windows on a personal computer.
quite a different story with macs, of course, because there you get all the stability of unix while having a perfect support (out of the box) for every single piece of hardware of your computer... besides, apple still teaches microsoft about how a good user experience actually should be.
I use windows xp its just easier wanna go linux though
Linux is a great OS. I found it, however, to be not quite as user friendly as even windoze. However Mac is just the best.
I'm running an updated version of SuSE 10.0 OSS here, running GNOME 2.12.2 browsing the web here with Firefox 1.5... I think Linux isn't really less user friendly that Windows is, it's just that people these days unfortunately tend to learn how to use a computer with the help windows and tend to be scared to start from scratch (i say start from scratch, theres not loads of difference as far as the front end goes... All of the general use applications are stored on the main menu just the same as windows is) the only real reason I have windows installed is so i can maybe run my games from time to time... Though with the help of Wine/Cedega Its becoming increasingly easy to get the high end games up and running... So, "In a world without walls and fences... Who needs Windows and Gates?"

I use linux and osx... windows at work
I happen to like osx alot.. not much of a fan of the old macos tho. check this out http://arstechnica.com/reviews/2q00/macos-qna/macos-x-qa-3.html (at the botton of page about Mach and BSD). windows is nothing but an ongoing nightmare.
also, for win alternative shells.. check http://www.litestep.net i think its based off of afterstep wm.

Linux is ok. I've dual-booted Fedora Linux on my computer for a while, but then I decided to remove it. There were two major problems. I had to have an USB mouse conneted to my iBook so I could right-click, and I couldn't configure it to reconize my Airport Extereme. Although the latter made me re-format the hard-drive. I mean a laptop without wireless internet?
I've used Windows for a while (Windows ME) *shudder* all the problems I've had... All the blue screen of deaths...
Then I decided to switch to Macs because they just looked better. They worked better.
Out of the three major OS's, Mac OS X is the best.

Well, I've seen the story before here, but mine is exactly the same:
Before I went to the university, I only new the name of Linux, that was all. But one of the courses I have, requires me to learn the basics of Linux. In the lessons, they used Knoppix, but I didn't liked their layout and hated it that boot-from-cd-phenomen. (certainly when I just wanted to make some exercices and switch back to Windows)
I couldn't install Knoppix on my pc (foolish distro) so I went looking for another one. One of my fellow students gave me an Ubuntu cd to try it. Since that day, I just love Linux more and more. I've got an old pentium2 running on Ubuntu. It runs pretty good (little slow, it's an old machine) and I like it (but as Bondings said, a little brown
) I only had to reinstall it once, because I had been messing around with packages (which resulted in a few broken once
)
However, my laptop still runs on Windows XP Home Edition SP2 as it was pre-installed at the store, and I don't like messing up my computer, my data is to precious to me
But when my Windows (which is doing pretty well, never went realy down) once crashes, I might install a linux-distro on it

OK, right after I wrote this post, my pc crashed! F****** Windows, oh I hate you. It wasn't to bad though. Everything's fixed again

I use Linux for anything which involves work (I'm a physicist), and Windows for what I regard as play. The tools which I regularly use would cost thousands of dollars on Windows, but come as standard on Linux.
IMHO Linux is a much better operating system with better security, no DLL hell, no registry, and the window manager which isn't intimately connected with the kernel when it crashes. In fact, Linux is more stable in general. Debian also has a much better way of updating software than Windows (and it benefits from the fact that it is mostly all free). That said, it requires some learning and you can't get Microsoft office for it.

I use
Windows XP Professional with SP2
Linux Fedora Core 4

It's a flip between Windows XP and Linux (ubuntu 5.10) so far. I use Windows for email and backing up my PocketPC, if I could find a way of doing that successfully in Linux, then I'd make a permanent switch.
I have Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server installed on the same computer, and they work fine. Though Windows is reknowned for the blue screen of death, in Windows 2000 Pro and Server, you can turn off the blue screen of death.
Another point, Windows XP sucks at everything except for user interface. Windows XP is wonderful for the 84-year old sitting in their wheel chair learning how to use a computer, but for all computer-saavy people, it has no options or complex capabilities. This is why I chose Windows 2000 over XP, but anyone learning how to use a computer is sure to like XP.
I don't exactly like Linux, first off because they have so many distributions, and none have the same concepts. Second, Red Hat has given me so many problems that I want to kill them. Third off, some of the Linux distributions don't have a Windows X interface, so you have to have some kind of background knowledge of linux command line interface. I had disturbing happenings of the latter using TurboLinux, and finally decided to reformat the hard drive. All methods of this did not work, so I was forced to try and replace the hard drive. We did not have any working hard drives at that point, and the BIOS of the computer was not new enough to have options that would boot from a CD, so I was forced to junk the whole apparatus, but without the IDE drives.
I have used Macintosh, and I feel that it has a good interface, but being so used to Windows 2000 makes me just turn back around and continue using Windows. The only thing I still remember that was good about Mac, was ShufflePuck.
Otherwise, Solaris, BSD, and all that other junk just doesn't interest me.

Hi there,
I'm still using windows as OS, but as far someone had learned me to handle and install Linux would I be happy to give it a try, as I'm as probably many others sick and tired of windows.
Cheers!

I'm currently using windows XP.
My biggest gripe is that it seems to deteriorate with time.
I just did a big rebuild - there went a day.
I've looked at some of the linux options but as I have no background there and grew up with Windows / DOS I just don't have the energy to learn a whole new OS.

I have learned of a Linux distribution called Gentoo, and supposedly this is a version of Linux that has an interface that is almost undistinguishable from Windows. It is a free distribution, and I am willing to try it as well as many others are. Just google it up and you will find the site. If someone could give some feedback to me about it that would be wonderful, as I do not have enough time to install it on another computer.
I think, that for WebServer or GameServer the best choice is BSD, but for home use Win and Mac Os rocks
winxp untill linux becomes platformable enough. There just isnt enough development for it.
WinXP at the moment, I'll be installing Ubuntu this weekend though.
HI!
On my Laptop and Desktop PC I am currently using Win XP home. On my older Computers I was using Win 95 and 98. It worked fine until i overclocked and crushed my RAM. It didn't tell me that the RAM was broken but it always started malfunctioning after power loss.
In school we are forced to use Mac. I personally hate it because they are just not compatible to all the machines at home. And they are really slow. The school has the newest ones but it still takes 10 f****** seconds to open Firefox.

I use Linux, and it never crashed up. It detected all my hardware nicely and works smoothly. I won't change it for nothing.
By the way, all my life I used Windows. I've been using Linux for six months.

Some OLD versión of linux was dificult, but actualy is very ease. try with mandriba or Sesu and tell me.
So i tried Suse and Mandrake (other name now i think...
)
And the biggest Problem was to change the tools...
And so i gave up fast...
I searched for a sidebar like desktopsidebar.com...
Flash Fxp???
Your OS "mandriba or Sesu" aren't german right?
Thats a Problem too...
(Sorry for that bad English...

I use windows xp sp2, but before i got this computer last month, i used windows ME. Looking at the poll really suprised me. I would have thought way more people would be using Mac's.
Windows xp owns! Software is normaly developed only for windows xp, games too,...
Linux/Red apache is only advised for web servers

Dual boot...Windows 2000 Enterprise Server and Redhat Linux, my laptop is XP Pro.
Mac OS X Tiger!!! I (my parents, i was 10!) had a Performer 600 or something that old in about 1993 and it was my first experience of a home computer other than the old BBCs from school with their 5.25(?)in floppys that were actually floppy!
That got outdated pretty quick back then and we got a PC! aaahhhh nnooooo i spent the next god knows how long wasting my time and effort with drivers and invasive installs. yes i used M$ Windoze.
Its not long ago now that i went and bought my own first computer and i'm glad to say i got a G4 iBook (12in) its cute and powerfull as hell!! Now i've got another one too a 4 year old PowerMac with dual G4 450mhz processors.
I know this doesn't sound like much to you windoze users but its more than enough when you have a considerably more stable and efficient OS based on the same UNIX code as linux OSes. And even most widows posts on here admitted to the increased stability on linux.
Its really true you see, once you go Mac, you never go back!! Anyway thats my 2 cents, and hopefully another 2 points! lol.

P.S. Aren't the proportins of users for each os very similar to the composition of the atmosphere?

i run a "hacked" version of Windows xp pro on both of my computers ( AMD 2400 on an Asus a7n8x mobo..and a celeron 700 on a dfi board) a buddy of mine removed alot of the extra garbage that comes bundled with Xp, making it smaller, less power consuming, and much more stable in my opinion. ( my computer is up 24/7 for usually about a month at a time without any issues until i shut it down to perform maintenace and clean the fans out..( i despise dust bunnies in my heat sinks))
used to run windows 3.1, loved the switch to 95... went from 95 to 98 which was the "living hell years" as i like to call them, Windows Me was a bit better, but an amazing resource hog.. so i experiemented with linux which i did like, but unfortunately it was quite restrictive in terms of decent software that ran with it. so i flipped to Windows 2000 for awhile... Then i went to windows Xp pro (original flavor) for a while which wasn't bad... but it had its share of issues, figured I'd try windows Xp home at one point just to see.... that lasted about a day and a half.... then back to XP pro, and then to what i got now. Finally im at a point that im happy with my os.... im not sure i really want to even try the next gen windows thats going to come out.

Those who still think that Linux is more difficult than Windows© should read this article
lol! 5 hours or less? i wish it only took me that long......
Im very picky how i set everything up, so it usually takes me about a day or so.. mind you that includes reinstalling all my extra software, music, firewalls etc..... the actual install of xp only takes like an hour. TG i don't have to do it very often

But I find and I know that linux and very better and also much more safe!
Definitely Windows XP!
Until any Operating System could ever come close and beat it, I'll stick to Windows. Can't wait for Vista to come out!
And seriously, I don't think there's any better Operating System out there better than the latest Windows. Not even Mac. I hate how it works.
Till then, Windows is the operating system to go.

100% Apple! I don't know how to use a Windows or Linux (or anything else for that matter) machine, although my DH is trying to turn me into a Linux geek, and since Mac (OS X) is being run over a UNIX shell, he's teaching me all sorts of code (that I don't understand.. My brain is just not meant for coding, lol)
Again, 100% Apple and proud!!!

I use SuSE linux 10.0 and i`m realy pleased of it, it`s really user friendly and has powerfull facilities.
I use Mac also. I never learned pc's. I usually use the camino browser. But there is is much I cannot use because so much is not mac compatible.

I have a error: I refer to SuSE (not Sesu) and mandriba is the mosth recent versión of Madrake.
SuSe is German, But recently Novell buy this distrbutión.
The mos Ease of Install and mantain is Suse.
Try it!!
I use Windows XP and Linux Ubuntu. There is good realy. I had windows 98 earlier but I have changed as I have bought new computer
If you want a stable hosting I then UNIX is the best
The Mac os is the best os out there today. It runs circles around Windoze Xp and Vista (whenever they can get it out). If you havn't tryed/seen Mac OS X Tiger, i recomend it to all computer users.

I won't install anything on the hdd's. |
your experience is a good example of why ubuntu sucks..
i use gentoo btw
I am Linux-geek and I use daily the Debian distro which offers all I need for surfing, developping, watching movies for instance.
i am both. i tried very much operation systems, at this moment i am uing windows xp, and gentoo. gentoo is very good and very stable, but is a bit more hard to work with.
I'm a Windows geek. One of my friend are beta-testing Windows Vista! Lucky guy. It look great, and works a lot faster then XP!
Windows is good for almost everything, Mac is good on music and movies, Linux (for me) are best for servers...

Windows XP... don't really care much about what OS I use as long as I can watch anime and do homework on it.
I seriously CAN'T STAND macintosh!
I really hate the fact it is so different from Windows, and is really incompatible with everything else.
I'm looking forward for when vista comes out - my friend is testing it, and it looks GREAT!

I`m never going to install Vista on, my machine, becouse it is garbage, stupid Windows, try something better, install Linux ...
I think Windows is the best choice for the naive users but linux is best choice from security point of view
i'm using windows 2000 pro and i have a powerbook 17 inch with tiger on it!i really like mac because there are no virusses, no spyware, and no stuppid things like ad programs ,...

I currently use Windows but am planning to run Linux in the background soon.
I use Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP, but secretly wish I could afford hardware of a Mac. ;p
On PC : XP n UBUNTU. I also got an Apple iBook on which I use Mac Os X Tiger. I am in love with OS X n Ubuntu.
Apple all the way baby!!! Even tho they're turning more and more into corporate ****** lol
I like windows best, because the mayor part of the games is made for this platform:)
Always i'm using Free BSD, but now i have got some troubles with my internet connection and now i'm Windows user
I always prefer Linux as it is stable, secure and yes of course free. At office I m forced to use Windows though.
Sudden Market capture of iPod made by Apple,Who provide Macintoce OS;created Ripples within Microsoft. So Macintoce(3%market share) can Surprise with their GUI very soon...then Post this Poll Again!!!
I'm using Windows XP Professional and it's good for me. I can do everything I want. I have used Linux and yes, there are some good features that windows don't have but at overall for me windows is better ,because of easier using. Also there are lots of good programs for everything I need. I thing there is one big disadvantage that windows is not as secure as Unix based OS's and offcourse I won't choose windows for server If I have a choise.
No body using NetBSD?
I like windows more than any other OS. I have five Windows and three Mac computers at my house. I experimented with Linux on one of my Windows computers. I didn't like it that much. I used the Ubuntu distro. I might try Linux again, but a different distro, maybe Fedora Core. As for the Macs, they're running Mac OS 9.2. Not much I can do on them.
Ive got the ultamite triboot, windows xp, viststa, and osx. Theese are my favorite oses, as you can see I have vista to piss my friends off showing them osx for AWSOME functionallaty an xp for normal use, also I have a couple of linux distros lying around.

I had been using both Windows (chiefly) and Linux (sometimes) up until 2003, when a friend of mine convinced me to try out Linux as the main system on my computer. Before then, my only interaction with Linux systems was at the computer centre of my graduate institute where I used to do a bit of programming but had no exposure to Linux system administration.
Well it wasn't as difficult for me to adjust during the migration, as most people would expect since a few of my experienced friends were always ready to help whenever I messed up. I started with a Mandrake 9.0 installation on my AthlonXP and learnt the ropes in a few months to come to th e point where I didnt' need to use Windows except extremely occasionally.
A new user to Linux might find the current Mandrake distributions extremely handy, since it comes with excellent hardware support and automates most of the detection and installation processes. In about 15 minutes, you'll have a fully functional production system at hand. It also comes with a rich set of system configuration tools (all accessible from a single point: Mandrake Control Center) which obviate the need to dabble with cryptic configuration files most of the time.
And so it was that I was quite happy with Mandrake and there was no need to explore other Linux distros or other OS's. But starting July 2006, as part of my MSc project work, I had to make a Linux based compute cluster using 10 UltraSparc machines (pre-packaged with Sun Solaris 9). The machines had been lying useless in our lab for years, since no one knew what to do when it came to properly administrating and managing a solaris system. My job:
Get them running on Linux.
This particular architecture/OS combo left me only two choices: Gentoo and Debian.
I decided to try out Gentoo, and beleive me, I have never seen such exhaustive and high quality documentation anywhere!! In spite of the fact that the architecture and the distro were completely alien to me, just following their handbook allowed me to have a working gentoo system on the UltraSparcs at the very first try. Gentoo's portage is so far, the best package management system I've seen and it beats all other distros/OS's hands down, when it comes to tailoring a system specifically your exact needs (with no extra baggage at all).
I was encouraged to migrate to gentoo on my PC also, and now it boots in less than half the time my previous Mandrake system used to boot!! The configuration part of the installation may seem daunting at first, and it is perhaps inadvisable for a newbie to Linux to start with Gentoo. But for an experienced user, it is the best thing out there and now that I've tried it out, I'm never looking back.
The bottomline is: No matter what your background, experience, or preference, Linux is worth a try. There is always some distro out there that caters very well to your tastes.

On my main computer system I use WinXP, on my server I use Fedora Core 3. I just can't bring myself to switching from Windows to Linux. I'm extremly comfortable with Windows and play games quite often, I feel that switching to Linux would hinder my game playing.

my operating system is windows xp professional edition. i used to have an apple mac but i sold it
And how to vote if one uses several OSs?
So, in my case Mostly WindowsXP. Could not say that it's better, I'm just used to it.
Win2k and Win2K3 and even NT 4 on the server side.
Also Debian Linux on one of the computers, took some time and efforts to set it up and make use of it. And failed to install it on HP server.
FreeBSD on the server. Just started, and I like it. Alot of brainwork and fun.

The best thing on windows is that when you need program for some purpose, you'll open google and find hundreds of programs for your need - one of them will certainly satisfy you
other OS dont have that
All other, so called, the best properties of OS belong to non-Win OSs

XP I use when I want to play game and so, and Ubuntu I use when text-editing, or when on the internet...
In stability, Ubuntu wins of course...
But in the user-friendly area... Windows... :{
The main problem with linux is that some of the distribution have really hard installations... and usually it's very hard to configure everything afterwards...
Luckily, I have my own linux-freak the can help me with that... :}

I use, depending on which machine I'm using, either Windows XP professional or Windows XP professional. All patched and locked down.
in my opinion, Linux is a far superior OS to microsoft 'windows'. I have two PCs and a Laptop. The laptop is dual booting Windows XP Pro, and Mandriva 2006. My other two PCs are running Helix Linux (hehehe) and SuSe. Itz not very well known but most windows software, say DVDShrink, was written IN linux FOR linux WITH linux code. Since then it has been made commercial, and windows has taken over a good peice of software.
Windows XP at home and Sun Solaris at work
im using xp pro, at times i hope there to be an update of some sort, becuase im sort of geeting sick of it. A fresh new design would be very nice!

it depresses me to see those results
to many windows users I wish they knew the past about how bill gates stole his way to the top.
But anyway, I used to be windows but I got tiered of it crashing so i went sesu linux but couldn't find drivers. then I want mandrake (it is called mandriva now i think) still same problem drivers were hard to find. So I went mac. And I have been happy.

I am a kinda mixed fan of both the operating systems viz., Microsoft Windows and the Graphical shell of Unix - Linux. Though I have tried more than ten distros of linux, but could not find the hospitality of Windows in any of them. On the other hand, the features of the current distros e.g., SuSE 10 and Xandros and not to forget Ubuntu cannot be found in either the Windows OSes or the Macs. But I think that the next version of Windows - Vista will be a big hit especially for the Linux geeks as it has a rich GUI(Graphical User Interface).
For now, my PC dual boots between Windows xp and Xandros 3.0.1 OC.

I have Windows XP at work and at home and for now I using it mostly. However, I have installed Ubuntu 5.10 (The Breezy Badger) on both places and surely that OS would be of my greatest interest in future.
I've got linux and windows both.
I have Windows XP Pro. For me it's the best OS especially when I was downloaded all upgrades... I had and check whole Windows series and for me XP is taste
Still using Win98 SE. It's to expensive to follow Microsoft, since I know nothing about Linux
Simple old windows XP. Just don't like anything else.
I've been using Windows XP for years. I'm currently running SP2 without any problems.
Now I am using win xp pro sp1.
But my favorite is Solaris.
On my lap top(vaio fs-640)is installed:
* win xp sp1,
* ubuntu 5.10
the sound didnt work in the begining but I installed the driver without problems, now works excelent with ubuntu but modem and memorystick drive dont work. The almost of time I use ubuntu. I think the new version of ubuntu will be very good; I also recomend mandriva 2006 for centrino lap tops.
I like the philosophy of free-software.
I have had many problems with winxp sp2, it is too secure that doesn't allow some network jobs works propely.

I love MSDos... jk... I use Win XP, I like it but probably will change to Vista
Microsoft rules!
Microsoft rules!
I use Kubuntu. But I also have XP one my mashine for games. But for work and internet Linux is the best.
Well, I have Windows XP Pro SP2. I would really like to have Macintosh. Though, the operating system you have depends on what you want to do. For example, gaming. If you want a gaming computer, you wouldn't go with Macintosh. Though, if you wanted a productive computer, you ought to go with Macintosh.
I use Windows 2000 on my laptop and have found it my favourite. I like it better than XP bacause it isnt as glitchy as XP
Well, I have to agree. I have not enjoyed XP. 2000 lacks features but it at least works.
I use Gentoo, Ubuntu, and Windows XP or 2000. Windows XP licencing is horrible, so I only use that at work.
What's nice about software nowadays is that you can install the same stuff on whatever operating system you like, mostly.
Eg: Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, Apache httpd, php, any java application, and, of course, vim, without which life with computers would be impossible.<
